5.2 ViewModes
Therearethreeprimary“groupviewmodes”availableinScrivener.Viewmodesgive
youapowerfulwaytoviewandmodifymultipledocumentsatonceinavarietyof
fashions,eachtailoredtodifferenttasks. Viewmodesaregenerallyonlytriggered
whentheeditorisaskedtoviewmorethanonedocumentatatime.Thiscanhappen
ifyouCmd-clickonmorethanonebinderitemorevenifyoujustclickonafolder.
Itisalsopossibletomanuallyenableaviewmode,allowingyoutoeasilyfleshouta
singledocumentwithnewindexcardsbeneathit.
Forthemostpart,Scrivenerwillanticipatewhatyouaretryingtodoandreact
accordingly.Ifyouclickonasingletextfile,itwilldisplaythecontentsofthattextfile
intheeditor.Ifyouthenclickonthegroupcontainingthatfile,itwillautomatically
switchtoyourpreferredgroupviewmode,theonewhichyouusedlast(corkboard
bydefault).
Anexceptiontothisruleiswhentheviewmodehasbeenexplicitlysettosingle
textfilemode.Ifyouintentionallydisablethecorkboardtoeditafolder’stext,then
theviewmodewillremaintext-onlyuntilchanged,nomatterwhattypeofitemyou
clickoninthebinder.
Akeyprincipleisthatviewmodesarejustthat. Theyarealternativewaysof
viewingabinderitemandthus,likethebinder,aremethodsfororganisation. You
canthinkofviewmodesasbeinglikeanelaborateextensionofthebinder,andin
thatsensetheyworkcloselywithitanddisplayinformationinthesametop-down
fashion.Youcandragitemsfromacorkboardintothebindertomovethosecards,or
viceversa.

themostoutofScrivener’suniquefileandfolderstructure.
Thedefaultviewmodewillpreferwhatevermodeyouhaveselectedlast. Ifyou
chooseoutliner,thenthisisthemodethatallcontainerswilldefaulttowhenclicked
upon.Itwillremainthiswayuntilyoumanuallychangemodesagain.
ThesectiononProjectPlanning(chapter12)goesintogreaterdetailonhowto
usecorkboardandoutlinermodestotheirmaximumpower.ThesectiononEditing
MultipleDocuments(section15.9)willcovertheuniqueScriveningsmodeindetail.
5.2.1 TheGroupModeToolbarControl
Includedinthedefaultapplicationtoolbarisaso-called“segmentedcontrol”. Itis
inthemiddleofthewindow,andcontainsthreebuttonsembeddedinasinglerow
(Figure5.3).
Thefiguredepictsthecontrolwhenagroupofitemsoracontainerhasbeense-
lected. Whenasingleitemhasbeenselected,thelabelwillchangeto“ViewMode”,
andtheicononthefarleftwilldepictasinglepage.
Thecontroldisplaystheactiveviewmodewithashadedbackground. Thisisthe
lastviewmodethatyoupicked,anditmeansthateditorwillalwaysusethatmethod
todisplaygroupsofcontentuntilyouchangeitagainwhileviewingagroup. To
changeamode,simplyclickonanyoftheotherbuttonsinthecontrol.Theviewfor

5.2.2 Corkboard
Scrivenerhasmadethecorkboardmetaphorpopularinmodernwritingsoftware.
Theconceptofrepresentingmanydocumentsasindexcards,lettingyoumovethem
around torestructureyour book, oropeningthemuptoedittheirtext, isquite
useful—butScrivener2takesthisevenfurther. Nowyouarenolongerconstrained
toviewingindexcardsincolumnsandrows;youcanusethenewfreeformmodeto
movecardsaroundasfreelyasyoumightonadeskorrealcorkboard. Groupto-
gethercardsthatarerelated,butspreadthroughoutyourdraft;spreadthingsoutin
achronologicalorder;thechoiceisyours. Whileyoucanchoosetocommityour
freeformorderingbackintoyourdraft,youcanalsofeelfreetojustleavethingsas
theyare,asanalternatewayofviewingasectionofyourwork.
Theimportantthingtorealisewiththecorkboardisthateachofthedisplayed
indexcardsrepresentfilesorfoldersinyourbinderoutline. Theydisplaythetitle
and thesynopsis(ashortdescriptionof theitem),andoptionallycanrepresenta
fewkindsofmeta-datausingreal-worldmetaphorsaswell.Justremember,cardsare
documents,andconverselydocumentscanallbeviewedascards.
Thecorkboardviewisrichwithfeatures,toreadmoreaboutitandhowtobest
useit,seeTheCorkboard(section12.1).
5.2.3 Outliner
Whilethebinderisinasenseaverysimpleoutliner,thereareoftentimeswhenyou
needtoviewyourbook,orpartsofit,inamuchlargercontextandwithagreater
degreeofinformationatyourdisposal. Theoutlinerviewletsyouseeyourbook
structureinastandardoutlineformatwithindentingusedtoindicatedepth. Italso
hastheabilitytodisplaymanydetailsofyourdocuments,suchaslabelcolour,word
counts,modificationdates,keywords,yourowncustommeta-dataandmuchmore.
Sincetheoutlinerprovidesfeedbackforsomuchmeta-data,itisagreatmodefor

5.2.4 Scrivenings
Thisisauniqueviewmodeinthatitworksnotonlywiththevieweditemsthem-
selves,butspecificallywiththeirtext,andisconsequentlyatoolforworkingwith
text(andfolder)items,ratherthanmultimediafiles. Allofthetextcontent(even
emptydocuments)willbestackedtogetherasifonalongspoolofpaper,lettingyou
readthroughlargesectionsofyourbookatonce,nomatterwheretheyarelocated.
Asyoumakeadjustmentstothetextinthisview,eachofthecorrespondingdocu-
mentswillbeupdatedasyouwork.Theoveralleffectisasifyouwereworkingina
singlelongdocument,butinfactyouareeditingpotentiallydozensorevenhundreds
offilesasyougo.
Scrivenings(frequentlyreferredtoasa“Scriveningssession”andknowntousers
ofversion1.xasEditScrivenings)aretemporaryeditingsessions.Youdon’tneedto
worryaboutsavingthem,orwhatwillhappenifyouclickonsomethingandthey
goaway.Itismerelyawayofpullingtogetheranumberoffilessoyoucanedittheir
textatonce,andthenreleasingthemwhenyoumoveon.

5.3 CompositionMode(FullScreenEditing)
CompositionMode(formerlyknownas“FullScreen”)isaspecialinterfacewhichwill
blotoutnotonlytherestofScrivener,buttherestofyourcomputeraswell,allowing
youtoconcentratefullyontheproductionoftext.Itonlyworksfordocumentsand
folders,andwhileitprovidesaccesstothemenus,QuickReferencepanels,andmost
aspectsoftheinspector,itsdefaultstateistosimplydisplaythetextcontentsofthe
selecteddocument(ordocuments,ifyouareviewingacombinedtext)ina“page”in

Scrivenerisaprojectbasedapplication,whichmeansthatitstoresyourprojectsas
separatefiles,ratherthanworkinglikeadatabasewhichhidesthelocationfromyou
andloadseverythingautomaticallywhenyoustartuptheprogram,orafilebased
programlikeWord,whichcreatesanemptydocumentwheneveryoulaunchit.The
intendeduseofaprojectistostoreeverythingrelatingtoasinglemajorwork,beit
yournextnovelorscreenplay,adissertationforyourmasters,oraserialcollectionof

6.3 OutliningYourDraft
Whydothatwhenwecanprocrastinateforanotherminute,though?Takealookat
thebinder.Let’sdiscusshowbesttouseScrivener’sDraftfolder.Unlikeawordpro-
cessor,Scrivener’sdesignphilosophyrevolvesaroundcreatingandorganisingyour
writingprojectinarbitrarypiecesaccordingtowhatismostcomfortableforyou.
Forexample,youcouldmakeanewfileforeachchapter,ortakethatevenfurther
andmakeanewfileforeachscenewithinthosechapters.Itistotallyuptoyou,and
