MeridianEnterprisefeaturesdifferenttypesofworkflowthatcanbeusedforvariouspurposes.Asystem
administratordecideswhichtypesavaultuses,dependingonyourorganization’sbusinessprocessesand
needs.Theworkflowtypesaredividedintotwomajorcategories:projectworkflowanddocumentworkflow.
Withineachcategoryaredifferenttypesthatcanbeusedeitheraloneortogether.Projectworkflowcanbe
implementedwitheithertheAdvancedProjectWorkflowModuleorworkareas.Documentworkflowcanbe
implementedwithdocumenttypeworkflow(theworkflowdefinedforeachdocumenttype),workflowdefin-
itions(workflowsdefinedindependentofdocumenttypes),orworkingcopies.

3.7.1
Understanding documentworkflowtypes
ThedocumentworkflowtypesinMeridianareusedtoperformtherevisionofindividualdocuments.Document
workflowensuresthatthestepsofproducinganewrevisionofadocumentareexecutedinthecorrectorder
bythecorrectpersons.Forexample,asimpledocumentworkflowmightrequirethatarevisionbereviewed
beforeitcanbereleasedforuse.Documentrevisionscanonlyoccurwithincertainstatesoftheworkflow.
Thecommandsthatchangeadocumentfromonestatetoanotherarecalledtransitions.Meridianfeaturesdif-
ferenttypesofdocumentworkflow:documenttypeworkflow,workflowdefinitions,andworkingcopies.
Workingcopiesisthesimplestofthedocumentworkflowtypes.Itconsistsofonlytwostatesperformedby
twocommands,CreateWorkingCopyandSubmitWorkingCopy.Thistypeofworkflowissometimes
referredtoascheck-out/check-in.AvariationoftheworkingcopiesworkflowiscalledQuickChange.Itworks
inthesamewaybutmaynotincrementtherevisionnumberofthedocumentdependingonhowthedocument
typeisconfiguredbyasystemadministrator.ThecommandsforQuickChangeareStartQuickChangeand
ReleaseQuickChangeasshowninthefollowingfigure.Aworkingcopyworkflowcanbeabortedwiththe
RevokeWorkingCopycommand.AQuickChangeworkflowcanbeabortedwiththeRevokeQuick
Changecommand.
Warning    Revokingaworkflowdeletesthecopyofthedocumentthatisbeingchangedintheworkflowand
reinstatesthereleasedrevisionoftheoriginaldocumentasthehighestrevision.Ifthedocumentwascreated
newintheworkflow,itisalsodeletedbutthereisnooriginaldocumenttoreinstatesobecertainthatthedoc-
umentwillnotbeneededorabackupcopyiskeptelsewherebeforerevokingthedocument’sworkflow.
Documenttypeworkflowismoderatelycomplexamongthedifferentdocumentworkflowtypes.Itcontrolsthe

izationmightnotuseallofthemoronlyallowuserswithcertainprivilegestoperformsomeofthetransitions.
Workflowdefinitionsarethemostconfigurableofallthedocumentworkflowtypes.Asystemadministrator
hasfullcontrolovertheconfigurationofaworkflowdefinition.Likedocumenttypeworkflow,thecommands
forusingworkflowdefinitionsarenamedforthetransitionsbetweenthestatesthatthecommandsrunandas
suchhavewhatevernamesthesystemadministratorspecifies.

whenitisplacedunderchange,allparentdocumentswillautomaticallyreferencethelatestreleasedrevision
ofthedocument.Underthismethodology,itistheresponsibilityoftheeditortoensurethatthechangesdonot
negativelyimpactanyoftheparentdocuments.TheShowWhereUsedcommandmaybeusedtoassistthe
editorinidentifyingtheaffecteddocuments.
3.8.1.2 Usingderiveddocuments
Tousederiveddocuments,theCreateNewVersionandReplaceDocumentmaybeusedinterchangeably
toreviseadocument.Whenadocumentisreplaced,asopposedtobeingplacedunderchangeusingdoc-
umentworkflow,severalthingsoccur:
Theoriginalversionofthedocumentisretired,butisstillvisibleinthevaultExplorerview.Allparent
documentscontinuetoreferencetheoriginal,retiredversionofthedocument.
Anewversionofthedocumentiscreatedasanew,uniquedocument.Areferenceiscreatedtotieit
totheoriginalversionofthedocument.
Whenadocumentismodifiedthatreferencestheoriginalversion,theretireddocumentisdetected
whenthedocumentisopenedinaCADapplication.Theuserisshowntheoptiontoreplacetheori-
ginalversionwiththenewversionofthedocument.
Thismethodologyisusefulforensuringthatparentdocumentsareonlyupdatedwhenaconsciousdecision
hasbeenmadetorevisetheparent.Replacingversionsalsoensuresthataspecifiedversionofaparentdoc-
umentwillalwaysresolvethecorrectchilddocuments,eveninhistoricalcontexts.
Note Toforcetheuseof CreateNewVersion,theChangereleaseddocumentprivilegemaybewith-
drawnbyasystemadministrator.
3.8.2
Understanding manufacturingdocumentmanagement
Whetherthedesigndocumentationispresentedin2Ddrawingsorin3Dmodels,manufacturingenvironments
presentissuesrelatedtothemovementofbothindividualcomponentsandassembliesthroughworkflow.
Thesecomponentsandassembliesmaybereleasedatvaryingstages,somanagementofthereferencerela-
tionshipsbetweenthesedocumentsiscritical.Additionally,itmaybenecessarytomanagetheserela-
tionshipsattheversionlevel,ratherthanassumingthatthelastreleasedversionisrelevant.
3.8.2.1 Usingworkareasinmanufacturingenvironments
Inmanufacturing,itisnotuncommonforvariouspartsofanassemblytobeunderchangebydifferentusersat
thesametime.Therefore,ensuringthatthereleasedversionoftheassemblyreferencesthecorrectpartsis
critical.Sincedocumentreferencescannotberesolvedacrossworkareas,thefollowingguidelinesshouldbe
followedinmanufacturingenvironments:

standardsandallowuserstoselectfromanunlimitedarrayofcomponenttypesandsizes.
Fromastandardsmanagementpointofview,itwouldbepreferabletodisable(thatis,notinstall)thelibraries
formostusers,andonlyinstallthemonthecomputerofthepersonsresponsibleforcreatingandmaintaining
companystandards.Thispersonwouldthencreateallcompany-standardmodels,andstoretheminthecor-
rectvaultlocationforgeneraluserstoaccess.Inthisway,usersmayonlyselectthestandard,approvedcom-
ponentsthatarestoredintheMeridianvault.
Usingthismethodologyrealizesthefollowingadvantages:
Companystandardsareenforced.
Meridianreferencesdisplayingtheassemblystructureandwherecomponentsareusedaccurately
reflectallcomponentsusedinassemblies.
Modelsofrawmaterialitems,suchastubingandbeams,canbederivedtoindividualmodelsto
reflectthecorrectcutlengthforthatinstance.
Standarditemsareapprovedonceandsimplyreusedinprojectsratherthancreatingduplicatecom-
ponentsforeachproject.
WerecognizethattheselibrariesareoftenasellingpointfortheCADapplicationsandthattheinitialcreation
ofthestandardlibrarymodelsanddrawingsmayrequiresignificanteffort.However,documentcontrol,stand-
ards,andstocklevelsarealsoveryimportantissuesfortheend-usercompany.Manufacturingcompanies
simplycannotaffordtokeeptheinfinitevarietiesofstockthatwouldberequiredtoallowdesignerstouseany
hardwaretypeavailable.
