troubleshootinstancesofthesefiles.

Uponexport,theinstancefileshowsyouthecurrentstateoftheSASeriesconfiguration.
TheXMLinstanceisbasedonanXMLschema.Theschemaisaseparatefilethatdefines
themetadata,andwhichservesasamodeloratemplatefortheinstancefile.Youwill
onlyusetheschemafileforreferencepurposes,ifatall.
ThedataintheinstancefileisbasedontheselectionsyoumakeontheXMLImport/Export
tabintheadminconsolewhenyouperformtheexportoperation.
Instancefilesusuallyendwiththe.xmlfileextension.
CreatinganInstanceFile
YoucancreateaninstancefilebyexportinganXMLconfigurationfilefromtheSASeries
Appliance.Evenifyouwanttoreplaceallofyourexistingconfigurationsettingsfora
givenobject,youshouldstartwithanexportedinstancefile.Theexportedinstancefile
containsalloftherequiredXMLprocessinginstructionsandnamespacedeclarations,
whichmustbeincludedexactlyasdefined.
EditingtheInstanceFile
AlloftheSASeriesAppliance’sXMLinstancefilesshareasimilarstructure.Onceyou
becomefamiliarwiththebasicstructure,youshouldbeabletonavigatethefileseasily.
Thefilescanbecomelarge,soyoumightfinditmoreefficienttouseacommercialor
opensourceXMLeditor.XMLeditorsoftenseparatetheeditabledatafromthestructural
display.Thisseparationreducesoreliminatesthechanceofaccidentallymodifyingan
XMLelementratherthanitsdata,whichispossiblewheneditinginasimpletexteditor.
DespitethepotentialadvantagesofusinganXMLeditor,youcandoanadequatejobof
editingyourconfigurationdatausingasimpletexteditor.
