UserAccesslog—Thislogfilecontainsinformationaboutwhenusersaccessthe
appliance,includingthenumberofsimultaneoususersateachonehourinterval(logged
onthehour),usersign-insandsign-outs,userfilerequests,sessiontimeouts(including
idleandmaximumlengthsessiontimeouts)andWebrequests.
AdministratorAccesslog—Thislogfilecontainsadministrationinformation,including
administratorchangestouser,system,andnetworksettings,suchaschangesto
sessiontimeouts,theoptiontoenable/disableURLbrowsinganduser-created
bookmarks,andmachineandserverinformation.Italsocreatesalogentrywhenever
anadministratorsignsin,signsout,orchangeslicensesontheappliance.
Sensorslog—Thislogfilecontainsinformationalandattackalertmessagesgenerated
byanassociatedIDPdevicemonitoringclienttrafficforpossiblenetworkintrusion.
Clientuploadlog—Thislogfilecontainssessioninitiation,connection,andtermination
loginformationthatyoucanusetohelpdiagnoseandtroubleshootproblemsusers
mayhaveconnectiontotheSASeriesAppliance.
TheSystem>Log/Monitoringpagesletsyouspecifywhicheventsarelogged,the
maximumfilesizeforthesystemlog,andwhethertologeventstothesyslogserverin
additiontologgingthemlocally.TheSystem>Log/Monitoringpagesalsoletyouview
thespecifiednumberofevents,savethelogfilestoanetwork,andclearthelogs.
Whenoneofthelogsreachestheconfiguredmaximumlogfilesize(200MBbydefault),
thecurrentdataisrolledovertoabackuplogfile.Anew,empty,fileisthencreatedfor
allsubsequent(new)logmessages.Usingthelogviewer,theadministratorcanseethe
mostrecent5000logmessages(theviewer'sdisplaylimit).Ifthecurrentlogfilecontains
lessthan5000logmessages,olderlogmessagesfromthebackuplogfilearedisplayed,
uptoatotalof5000logmessages.Thismakesthelogfilesappearasone,eventhough
theyarestoredseparately,accordingtotheconfiguredmaximumlogfilesize.
WhenyouchoosetosavethelogmessagesorusetheFTParchivefunctiononthe
Maintenance>Archivingpage,thebackuplogfileisappendedtothecurrentlogfile,and
isthendownloadedasonelogfile.Ifthelogfilesarenotarchivedorsavedbythetime
theyarerolledoveronceagain,theoldestlogmessages(savedinthebackuplogfile)
arelost.
Additionally,youcanuseanetworkmanagementtoolsuchasHPOpenViewtomonitor
anSASeriesApplianceasanSNMPagent.TheSASeriesAppliancesupportsSNMPv2,
implementsaprivateMIB(managementinformationbase),anddefinesitsowntraps.
Toenableyournetworkmanagementstationtoprocessthesetraps,youneedto
downloadtheJuniperNetworksMIBfileandspecifytheappropriateinformationtoreceive
thetraps.Youcanconfiguresomeofthetrapstosuityourneeds.Formoreinformation

administratorrequestsorlosesfunctionalitytoamajorityofsubsystems,itwritesa
criticaleventtothelog.
Major(severitylevels8-9)—WhentheSASeriesAppliancelosesfunctionalityinone
ormoresubsystems,butuserscanstillaccesstheapplianceforotheraccess
mechanisms,theSASeriesAppliancewritesamajoreventtothelog.
Minor(severitylevels5-7)—WhentheSASeriesApplianceencountersanerrorthat
doesnotcorrespondtoamajorfailureinasubsystem,itwritesaminoreventtothe
log.Minoreventsgenerallycorrespondtoindividualrequestfailures.
Info(severitylevels1-4)—WhentheSASeriesAppliancedisplaysanotification
message,whenanend-usermakesarequest,orwhenanadministratormakesa
modification,theSASeriesAppliancewritesaninformationaleventtothelog.
CustomFilterLogFiles
TheCentralManagerpackageallowsyoutofilterandformatthedatainyourevents,
useraccess,andadministratoraccesslogfiles.
Whenyoufilterlogfiles,theSASeriesApplianceonlysavesthosemessagesspecified
withinthefilterquery.Forexample,youmaycreateaquerythatonlylogsentriesfora
particularrangeofIPaddressesorforuserswhoaresignedintoaspecificrealm.To
createaquery,usetheSASeriescustomexpressionlanguage.
Whenyouformatlogfiles,theSASeriesAppliancesimplychangesthe“look”ofthelog
messagesbasedonyourspecifications.Logformatsdonotaffectwhichdatathe
appliancesaves;formatsonlyaffecthowtheappliancedisplaysthedata.AnSASeries
Applianceincludesstandard,WELF,andW3Clogformats,butyoumayalsochooseto
createyourowncustomformat.Tocreateacustomformat,uselogfields.
DynamicLogFilters
TheCentralManagerpackageprovidesadministratorswiththeabilitytoquicklychange
thelogviewbyclickingonanydatalogvariablelinkinthecurrentlyviewedlog.For
instance,ifyouwanttotemporarilyviewtheUserAccessLogbasedonaparticularIP
address,createa“quickfilter”byclickingonanyoccurrenceofthatIPaddressinthe
currentlogandtheSASeriesApplianceimmediatelyredrawsthelogtoshowallentries
containingthespecifiedIPaddress.Furthermore,clickingonadditionaldatalogvariable
linksexpandsthequickfilterandupdatesthecurrentviewofthelog.
Aswithcustomlogfilters,dynamiclogfilterschangeonlythecurrentviewofthelog—
notthedatathattheSASeriesAppliancesaves.
