General Information
Welcome to the learning & development calendar for 2013.  The activities summarised in this publication are by no 
means a complete guide to all learning opportunities available at St John of God Subiaco Hospital (SJOGSH).  Many 
other departments/wards/units offer ongoing, in-service educations sessions focusing on contemporary issues for their 
specialty service.

Our vision is to continue to develop as a learning organisation that embraces creativity and innovativeness in the   
pursuit of caregiver development and excellence in the delivery of quality health care.  Therefore, our desire is that 
caregivers engage in the professional and personal learning opportunities available at SJOGSH , and external to 
SJOGSH.    
This vision is achieved through the provision of a wide range of professional, educational and learning  
opportunities that include:

Objectives 
The Learning and Organisational Development (LOD) team is committed to the principle of lifelong learning and 
development of the whole person.  Caregivers are encouraged to assess their own individual learning needs and     
interests, and take advantage of the opportunities offered at SJOGSH and external to SJOGSH. 
Alternatively, LOD staff can assist caregivers in determining the best way to meet their learning and development 
needs through a custom designed development plan - “Design Your Own Career Track”

SJOGSH provides a number of venue settings for the lectures, tutorials, seminars and conferences.  Venue bookings 
for:

Auditorium and Meeting Rooms 1, 2 & 3 can be made through the Conference Centre on 9382 9415. 
• 
Lecture Theatre, Clinical Skills Training Room and Computer Training  Workshop can be made through LOD 
administration office on 9382 6873.

SJOGSH has a fully equipped library, providing nursing and medical resource material; internet facilities; one-on-
one tutorials on searching techniques; on-line catalogues; interlibrary loans; research and educational

Traineeship and Apprenticeships
Traineeship and Apprenticeships
SJOGSH in collaboration with Institute of Technology and the Apprenticeship Centre, provide traineeships, usual-
ly for a nominal duration of 12 months or more, which are available either on a part-time or full-time basis to 
caregivers that are eligible.  Caregivers may be eligible for a traineeship if they have been employed more than 
3 months full-time, or 12 months part-time with their current employer, work at least 20 hours each week, and do 
not hold any formal qualifications of Certificate III or above in a related area (some exclusions apply) and are 
Australian Residents.  For further information, contact LOD.

SJOGSH  provides pre-vocational medical education through its Medical Surgical Teaching Unit and  
offers a range of weekly tutorials, medical teaching meetings and bedside teaching.  For further information,

a sign-in sheet will be provided for accurate record of participant attendance.

All caregivers must request their attendance at a study day to either their Staff Development Nurse (SDN) or 
Manager. Their SDN or Manager will then contact the administration team within LOD to make their booking. 
Bookings will only be accepted two months prior to course date to minimise non-attendance. 
No bookings will be accepted direct from the caregiver.

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required of enrolled/
Division 2 nurses to administer and monitor intravenous medications and their  
effectiveness for clients within the nursing context.
