Pivoting Tables
Thedefault tables produced may not display information as neatly or as clearly as you would like. With
pivot tables, you can transposerows and columns ("flip" the table), adjustthe order of data in a table,
and modify the table in many otherways. Forexample, you can change a short, wide table into a long,
thin one by transposing rows andcolumns. Changing the layoutof the table does not affecttheresults.
Instead, it's a way to display your information in a different or moredesirablemanner.
1. If it's not already activated, double-click the Owns PDA *Gender * Internet Crosstabulation table to
activate it.
2. If the Pivoting Trays window is not visible,from the menus choose:
Pivot > Pivoting Trays
Pivoting trays provide a way tomove data between columns, rows, and layers.

Editing Tables
Unless you've taken thetime tocreate a custom TableLook, pivot tables are createdwith standard
formatting.You can change the formatting of anytext within a table. Formats thatyou can change
include fontname, font size, fontstyle(bold or italic),andcolor.
1. Double-click the Level of education table.
2. If the Formatting toolbar is not visible, from the menus choose:
View > Toolbar
3. Click the title text, Level of education.
4. From the drop-down list offont sizes on the toolbar,choose 12.
5. Tochange the color of the title text, click the text color tool andchoose a new color.
You can also edit the contents of tables andlabels. Forexample, you can change the title of this table.
6. Double-click the title.
7. Type Education Level for the new label.
Note:If you change the values in a table, totals andother statistics are not recalculated.

Hiding Rows and Columns
Some of the data displayedin a tablemay notbe useful orit may unnecessarily complicate thetable.
Fortunately, you can hide entire rows and columns withoutlosing any data.
1. If it's not already activated, double-click the Education Level table to activate it.
2. Click Valid Percent column label toselectit.
3. From the Edit menu or the right-click pop-up menu choose:
Select > Data and Label Cells
4. From the View menu choose Hide or from the right-click pop-up menu choose Hide Category.
The column is now hidden but notdeleted.
To redisplay the column:

View > Show All
Rows can be hidden anddisplayed in the same way as columns.
Changing Data Display Formats
You can easily changethe display formatof data in pivot tables.
1. If it's not already activated, double-click the Education Level table to activate it.
2. Click the Percent column label toselectit.
3. From the Edit menu or the right-click pop-up menu choose:
Select > Data Cells
4. From the Format menu or the right-click pop-up menu chooseCell Properties.
5. Click the Format Value tab.
6. Type 0 in the Decimals field to hide all decimal points in this column.

Using Predefined Formats
1. Double-click the Marital status table.

The TableLooks dialog box lists a variety of predefinedstyles. Selecta style from thelistto preview it

Changing the Default Table Formats
Although you can change the format of a table after ithas been created, itmay be more efficient to
change the default TableLook so that you do nothave to changethe formatevery timeyou create a table.
Tochange the default TableLookstyle for yourpivot tables, from themenus choose:
Edit > Options...
1. Click the Pivot Tables tab in the Options dialog box.
2. Select the TableLook style that you want to use forall new tables.
The Sample window on the right shows a preview of each TableLook.
3. Click OK to save your settings andclose the dialogbox.
All tables thatyou create after changing the default TableLook automatically conform to the new
formatting rules.
Customizing the Initial Display Settings
Theinitial display settings include the alignmentofobjects in the Viewer,whether objects are shown or
hidden bydefault, and the width of theViewer window.To change these settings:
1. From the menus choose:

Edit> Options...
2. Click the Viewer tab.
The settings are appliedon an object-by-object basis. Forexample, you can customize the way charts
aredisplayed without making anychanges tothe way tables are displayed. Simply select the object
thatyou want to customize,andmake the changes.
3. Click the Title icon todisplayits settings.
4. Click Center to display all titles in the (horizontal)center of the Viewer.
You can also hideelements, such as the log and warning messages,that tend to clutteryour output.
Double-clicking on an icon automaticallychanges that object's display property.
5. Double-click the Warnings icon to hide warningmessages in the output.
6. Click OK to saveyour changes and close the dialog box.
Displaying Variable and Value Labels
In most cases, displaying the labels forvariables and values is more effective than displaying the variable
name or the actual data value. There may becases,however, when you wanttodisplayboth thenames
and the labels.
1. From the menus choose:
Edit> Options...
2. Click the OutputLabels tab.
