AboutBufferCalculations
BufferfunctionalityusesaWidthsettingtocreateaBufferthatissomemeasureddistancefromthe
outlineoftheobject.UsingLatitude/Longitudedata,theperfectbufferwidth,asdefinedinnative
Latitude/Longitudedecimaldegrees,maychangeondifferentportionsofanobject.Thisisbecause
thewidthisprovidedinsomeflatmeasurementunit,(forexample,miles,meters),andthedecimal
degreetomeasurementtransformationwillvarydependingonthelocationontheearth.Forexample,
amilespansalargernumberoflatitudedegreesasyoumovetowardthepolesoftheearthand
awayfromtheequator.
MapInfoProcalculatesanativedecimaldegreewidth(convertingfromtheinputmeasurementunit)
foronelocationintheobject,typicallythecenteroftheboundingbox.Thus,themeasuredOnEarth
(Spherical)distancefromtheboundaryoftheoriginalinputobjecttotheboundaryofthenewbuffered

InMapInfoPro,youcanproduceCartesiancalculatedbuffers.Usingthisoption,thedatais
consideredtobeinaflat-projectedcoordinatesystem,andthemeasuredbufferwidthsarecalculated
usingCartesiandistances.Thisproducesexactbuffers(asmeasuredbytheCartesianDistance
functions)aslongasthedatainnotinaLatitude/Longitudeprojection.
