Whenregisteringyourrasterimage,youneedtoknowthemapcoordinatesthatcorrespondtoyour
image.Ifyourrastermapimageshowsagraticule(agridoflongitude/latitudelines),youcan

Usingarasterimageasthebaselayerofyourmapgivesyouadetailedbackdropforyourother
maplayers.Youcaneasilychangethesize,scale,orcenterpointofthedisplayedimage.For
example,ifyouwanttoenlargepartoftheimage,usetheZoom-intool.Keepinmind,however,

Opening a Raster Image
Whenyouopenarasterfileyouneedtoregisterittoidentifycoordinatepointreferencesforthe
image.Usingavectormapasareference,youidentifythecoordinatesofthevectormapandmatch
themwithequivalentpointsontherasterimage.ThiscoordinateinformationallowsMapInfoProto
determinetheposition,scaleandrotationoftheimagesothatyoucanoverlayvectordataontop
oftheimage.ThecoordinateinformationisstoredinaTABfilecreatedduringtheregistration
process.TheTABfileenablesyoutore-opentherasterfileinMapInfoProformat.
Youusuallyregistertheimagethefirsttimeyouopenit.However,youdonotneedtoregisterthe
imageifyoudonotplantousevectordatawithit,orifitalreadycontainsgeoregistrationinformation.
Rasterimagesusuallyfallintooneofthreecategories:
•Afullyregisteredimage,containingcontrolpointsandaprojection(forexample,GeoTIFFfile).
•Apartiallyregisteredimagecontainingcontrolpoints,butmissingaprojection(forexample,an
imagewithanassociatedWorldfile).
•Anunregisteredimagemissingcontrolpointsandaprojection.

them.Later,whenyouoverlayvectordata,MapInfoProdistortsandrotatesthevectordatasoboth
layerscanlineupproperly.Identifyingsignificantcontrolpointsmakesthismatchupprocesseasier.
Wesuggestyouusehighway/streetintersectionsandprominentlandmarksascontrolpoints,as
theyrarelymove.
Specifyingthecorrectprojectionoftherasterimageisalsoimportantforaccuratedisplay.Images
thatdonothaveknownprojections,suchasunrectifiedaerialphotographs,arelesssuitableforuse
withvectordata.
TherearetwowaystoregisterarasterimageinMapInfoPro.Eachinvolvesspecifyingthemap
coordinatesofcontrolpointsonareferencemapandmatchingthemwithequivalentpointsonthe
rasterimage.Todeterminemapcoordinates,youcan:
•Identifyapoint'scoordinatesfromthepapermap.
•Determinearasterimagescontrolpointcoordinatesonscreenandautomaticallytransferthe
informationtotheImageRegistrationdialogbox.
Ifyouscannedintheimagefromapapermap,themapmostlikelycontainsagraticule
(latitudeandlongitudegrid).Youcanchoosethosecoordinatesforprominentfeaturesand
enterthemintheImageRegistrationdialogbox.

ReprojectingaRasterMap
Fromtimetotime,youwillneedtousearastermapregisteredinoneprojectioninanothermapin
differentprojection.Youcanreprojecttherasterimage,thatis,changethecoordinatesystemand
thewaytherasterimagedisplaystoaccommodatethenewvectormap.Typically,theopenmap
dictatestheprojectionofthesuccessivelydisplayedimages.Youcanalsoreprojecttherasterusing
theprojectionofavectortable.
ReprojectingaRasterbasedonaVectorMap
Ifyouareworkingwithregisteredrasterdatasuchassatelliteandaerialphotoimages,scanned
maps,grids,seamlesstablesandWMSdata,youmightwanttoreprojectthatrasterdatato
accommodateavectormap.
MapInfoProperformstherasterreprojectionwhenyouopenaregisteredrasterimageinsideofan
existingMapwindowwithadifferentprojectionorwhenyouchangetheprojectionofaMapwindow.
Duringtherasterreprojectionprocess,MapInfoProrecalculatesthepixelvaluesofthesourceimage
tomakethemdisplaycorrectlyinthedestinationimage.Inthisresamplingprocess,MapInfoPro
triestorestoreeverypixelvalueoftheimagebasedonthepixelsaroundit.InMapInfoProthere
aretwomethodsforcalculatingthepixelvaluesofthedestinationimage:CubicConvolutionand

Duetothisfeature,thesearetheprecedencerulesforMapwindowprojection.
Bothvectorandrasterlayershave"equalrights",thatis,everynewlayer(withoutregardfortype)
isreprojectedintothecurrentMapwindow'sprojection.Thatis,whichevermapisopenedfirsttakes
precedenceforprojection.
YoucanchangetheprojectionofaMapwindowcontainingamixofrasterandvectorlayers
bysettingtheimageprocessingreprojectionpreferencetoAlwaysorOptimized.
Note:
MapInfoProdoesnotletyouchangetheprojectionorimageprocessing/reprojectionofamapthat
displaysrasterimagesfromatileserver,becausethiswouldcreateinaccuraciesinyourmap.The
projectionsystemofthedatamayvarybetweentileservers.Forthisreason,wedonotrecommend
displayingtilesfromdifferenttileserversinthesamemapunlessthetileserversusethesame
projectionsystem.
Whenyouareworkingwithpaletterasterimages(likeascannedmap),animagemightcontainall
256colors.IfyoudisplaythisimageintheAdjustImageStylesdialogboxandcleartheTransparent
checkbox,thecolor"white"becomestransparent.Ifyoudonotwantthisdisplaybehavior,select
theTransparentcheckboxandchooseanothertransparentcolor(usingSelectColor).
TransferringVectorMapCoordinatesDirectlytoaRasterMap
Totransferthecoordinatesautomaticallyfromavectormaptoarasterimage,youneedavector
mapofthesameimage.Then,youdisplaythevectormapsidebysidewiththeImageRegistration
dialogbox,whichshowsapreviewoftherasterimage.Clickaprominentfeatureinthevectormap
todetermineitscoordinatesandtransferthiscontrolpointtotheImageRegistrationdialogbox.
Totransferavectormap'scoordinatestoarasterimage:
1. OntheFilemenu,clickOpenandRasterImagefileformat.
2. ChoosetherasterimagefileandclickOpen.TheDisplay/Registerdialogboxdisplays.
3. ClickRegister.TheImageRegistrationdialogboxdisplays.Apreviewoftherasterimage
appearsinthelowerhalfofthedialogbox.
4. ChoosetheProjectionbuttontospecifytheimage'sprojection.Ifyoudonotsettheprojection,

5. Toaddcontrolpoints,clicktheAddbuttontoaddacontrolpointentrytotheControlPointslist.
6. ClickthePickfromMapbuttonandselectalocationintheMapwindowthatmatchesalocation
inyourrasterimage.MapInfoProupdatestheMapXandMapYfieldsintheEditControlPoint
dialogboxwiththenewcoordinates.ClickOKtosavethisentryandclosethedialogbox.
WhenthePickfromMapbuttonisdisabled,youcanselectlocationsdirectlyfromthe
