Creating notebook links
Linksare formulaswithfilenamesinthem. Youcan linkto cellsinanother
notebook, another spreadsheet that Quattro Pro supports, orafile onthe
Internet. The reference islive;thismeansQuattro Pro updates the link
resultswhen the referenced data changes.Another name fora live link is a
hotlink.
Whenyou linknotebooks, the primary notebook must be aQuattro Pro file.
The supporting filescanbe in any spreadsheet format that Quattro Pro
supports. Asupporting file could evenbe anInternet file.

You cancreate linksby typing them, pointing to them, or pasting them.
Wheneveryou opena notebook that contains alink, youare prompted to
update linksfrom supporting files. However, you can update and maintain
linksany time.
The filename precedes the spreadsheet reference and isenclosed in
brackets;asinthe following example:
+[BUDGET]B:A15
There are several advantages to setting upnotebooklinks instead ofusing
multisheetnotebooks:
Sharing information
By linking pertinent information in differentfiles, youcaneliminate
redundancy. Because Quattro Pro updatesprimary formulaswhen youmake
achange, yourdataisalwaysupto date. By using one formula for several
files or notebooks,yousave diskspace.
Dividing work among several people
If youuse linked filesto performa task, youcan divide the task among
several people. For example, say three usershave notebookskeeping track
ofanemployee’sIdentification Number, Salary, and HoursWorked,
respectively. Afourthuser, whose job isto determine overtime pay, canlink
to these three notebooks to create amaster notebook that calculates
overtime pay.
Building data models by linking notebooks
You cancreate adatamodel — aframeworkofrelated informationbuiltfrom
several files —by linking files.Ifyou access, vialinks, the data fromother
files, you canbuild larger modelsthat exceed the limits ofa single notebook.
Preserving portabilityto non-3-D spreadsheets or databases
Because only one sheetofanotebook issaved whenyousave anotebookin
some other formats, youmay want to linkthe first sheets ofdifferent
notebooksinstead ofsheetswithin the same notebooks.
Naming links
If youoftenlinkto certain cells, you can store the reference in anamed cell
(eitherinthe active notebookorina separate one) to simplify the process.
Naming linksoffersseveral advantages:

Ÿ To reference adifferent file ordifferent cells, youneed to edit only the
reference inthe named cell, not each individual link.
Ÿ Ifthe linkstatement is long, youcanchoose a short name to reference
instead oftyping the entire linkstatement. Suppose youoftenreference
the total ofcellsF12..F36on sheet Bin the file BUDGET.Instead of
typing @SUM([BUDGET]B:F12..F36) whereveryouwant that sum, you
canname acell TOTAL, and type @SUM([BUDGET]B:F12..F36)inthe
cell. Whereveryou want thatsum, you can type +TOTAL instead of
typing the full link.
Ÿ When youmove anamed cell inasupporting notebook while the primary
notebookis closed, the primary notebook is updated to reflect the change
the nexttime youopenit. Forlinks that referto cell addresses, the
primary notebookisnot updated.
Linking to closed notebooks
Afile doesnot have to be open for you to linkto it.Youcantype a linkto a
closed file. When youopen aprimary notebook, you canenable the Update
Referencesbutton fromthe dialog box thatappears. Thisloadsonly the
linked valuesfromsupporting files, leaving the supporting filesclosed. This
is useful if youdo nothave enough memory to open the linked files.
Linking closed files hasone disadvantage:youcannot update linksto closed
files. Forbest results, structure linked fileshierarchically, with linksthat flow
only one way. Thenyou canworkonone file at atime.As long asyou start
withthe file at the bottomofthe hierarchy and proceed upward (choosing
Update References foreachfile you open), the values are alwayscorrect.
If youare revising notebookA (which hasalink to notebookB) onanetwork,
and someone else is revising notebookB, the primary notebook, clickEdit,
Links,RefreshLinksafter that person savesand closesBto update the links
in notebookA.
Moving and copying links
These rulesapply whenyou copy and move notebooklinks:
Ÿ When youcopy alink, relative cellreferencesin the formula adjust like
othercell addresses. Relative cellreferenceschange to reference position,
while absolute cell referencesstay the same. For more informationon
relative cellreferences,see “Setting celladdresses”onpage 150.
Ÿ When youcopy alinkfromone notebook to another, the linkremains,
evenifyoucopy it into the notebook it references. When you move alink
into the notebookit references, Quattro Pro removes the link, leaving
only the sheet and cell reference.

Ÿ Ifyoumove aformula to another notebook without moving the cells it
references, Quattro Pro createsalink to the original notebook.
Ÿ When youmove cellsina supporting file, any linksto it inopenprimary
notebookadjust accordingly. However, linksinclosed filesare not
updated. To avoid this problem,use cell namesin linkswhen possible.
Eachtime youopen aprimary notebook, cell names that have been moved
are updated.
Typing a notebook link
Whenyou type anotebook link, type aplussign (+) asthe first characterin
the cellwhenthe linkisthe firstiteminthe cell, so the reference is not
interpreted asa label. Youshould also follow thisformat:
+[Drive:\Path\Filename.Extension]Sheet:Cell reference
Forexample, the following linkstatement entersthe value fromcell B9on
sheet Cinthe BUDGET.QPWfile fromthe C:\ARCHIVEfolder into the
active cell:
+[C:\ARCHIVE\BUDGET.QPW]C:B9
The linkaddressiscomposed ofthe following:
Ÿ drive — the drive containing the file. Thisisnecessary only ifthe file you
are referencing is not onthe same drive asthe primary notebook.
Ÿ path— the pathto the folder containing the file.Thisis necessary only
when the file is not inthe same folder the primary notebook.
Ÿ filename — the name of the file.
Ÿ extension —a three-lettersuffix separated fromthe filename by aperiod
(.). It is necessary only whenthe file has adifferent extension fromthe
primary notebook.
Ÿ sheet — any valid sheet name, sheetrange, or groupname (such asC,
Sales, D..F, or YearToDate).
Ÿ cell reference — any valid cell address, pair ofcoordinates,or cell name.
However, cell coordinatesare valid only when the link containsa
spreadsheet functionto operate onthe cells. The link inthe example
above (beginning with+) simply links the active cell with the referenced
cell.
If youkeepalllinked filesinthe same folderand use the same extensionfor
each, youonly have to enter afilename for links. Thisisbecause the default
drive, path, and extensionare the same asthose ofthe primary notebook.
Also, whenyoumove alllinked filesto adifferent folder, youdo notneed to
edit the references.

How wildcards work in links
You canuse the wildcardsquestion mark (?) and asterisk(*) in links.A
questionmark(?) standsfor any single character, and anasterisk(*) stands
for any number ofcharacters. The following examplesshow how different
wildcard characters workinnotebooklinks:
Ÿ [] — looksin the active notebook
Ÿ [*] —links to allopen notebooks
Ÿ [AB*] —links to all open notebooks whose names beginwithAB

Inserting hyperlinks
You cancreate ahyperlink in your notebook that jumpsyou to anotherfile or

automatically convert it to an Internet link.
You canevenmodify QuickLinksto convert the link to more meaningful
terms. Forexample, youmight specify that whenyou type “www.corel.com,”
QuickLinksshould replace the visible text with “Corel” and create alink to
the Corel home page at URLhttp://www.corel.com.
