Configuring the emulation
The original sourcedocument wasintended tobesent toaHPPCL printer;
EscapeE
interpretsthe instructionsin thisdocumentandrepresentsit onyour
screeninstead. The document file usuallycontainsall the instructionsnecessary
for the pagestobe printed, but ifthey are absent, e.g. in araw textfile, the
printerresortstousing'default' parameters, and
EscapeE
isconfigured tocope
with this. Experts using specialist systems may, however, have alteredthese
defaults; in thiscase
EscapeE
mustalsobe reconfigured tomatch.
Toconfiguretheemulation
1. Choose ‘Configuration...’ from the Optionsmenu.
2. Select the ‘Printer’ tab.
3. Select the paper size from the drop-down list; the measurementswill be
entered in the width and height boxesautomatically (ininchesor centimetres
asyouprefer). Touse non-standard sizedpaper,choose‘CUSTOM’ from the
list andenter the width xheight in inchesor centimetresalongside. Youmay
‘Save’ the custom size if you wish.
4. Setthe font, numberoflinesperpageandline endsymbolsasrequired.(Try
lookingin the printer'smenus, or printits'test page'.)
5. Select the appropriate ink colour ifyouare emulating aspotcolourprinter.
6. Tick the 'Edge toedge printing' option ifthe emulated printer printstothe
edge of the paper.
7. Tick the 'Plotter' checkboxif the printer isrequired tostart in HP-GLmode,
i.e.to emulate aplotter rather than aPCL printer.
8. It may be necessary totick the 'Exchange width & height' checkbox as some
plottershave rotatedcoordinate systems whereby the width and height ofthe
paper are interchanged.
9. Select the resolution of the printer.
10.Select the orientation of the document.
11.Click the 'Save' button to retain these settingsafter youclose the program.
Alternatively,click 'OK' touse them for the current session.
Notes:
Ifthe file isknown tobe from aplotter then thereisnoneedtosetupadefault
paper size- the page ismadebig enough toencompass the whole areaofthe
plot.The fileis deemedtobe from aplotter if the file extension is.PLT or .HPG
or itstartswith aplotter commandrather than PCLor ifthe 'Plotter' boxhas
been checked.

Setting the printer defaults
Theprinter youusetoprintyour documentmay not be the same asthe original
document wascreated touse, soyoumayneedtosetupsome default parameters
relating toyourchosenoutput printer.
Tosettheoutputprinterdefaults
1. Choose‘Configuration...’fromtheOptionsmenu.
2. Select the ‘Printer’ tab.
3. Ifyour printer allowsanalphanumericIDtobeassociatedwithaspecific tray,
click the ‘Add media’ button.You will be repeatedly prompted first for the
name and thenfor thetray numberwithwhich it isassociated. Giving anull
name or clicking ‘Cancel’ terminates the process.
4. Enter the number ofthe input paper tray that the printer should defaulttoif
thetraynumber wasnotspecified inthe original document.
5. Tick'Overrideprint file setting' ifyouwanttoensurethatthedefault input tray
is usedin preferencetothat specified inthe original document.
6. Enter the number oftheoutput bin that the printer should defaulttoifthebin
numberwasnotspecifiedin the original document.
7. Tick 'Override print file setting' ifyouwanttoensurethatthedefault output
binisused inpreference tothatspecifiedintheoriginal document.
8. Select thedefaultprinting mode:simplex,duplex(short edge binding) or
duplex(longedgebinding).
9. Tick 'Overrideprint file setting' toignore theoriginal document'sprinting
mode.
10.Tick 'Simulatesimplexusing duplex(short)' or 'Simulate simplexusing duplex
(long)' iftheremay be simplexpagesinyour documentbuttheoutput printer
isinduplexmode.
These optionsinsertablank page onthe reverseof anypagespecified as
simplex,sothe printer regardsit asduplex. Some printerscannotswitch
betweensimplexandduplexduringaprintrun,so,forexample,thiscanbe
usedwhenthere isasimplex title(banner) pagein anotherwise duplex
document.
11.Click the 'Save' buttontoretainthese settings after you close the program.
Alternatively, click 'OK' touse them for the current session.

specifymultiple copiesbyentering anumber inthe ‘Copies’ panel.

5. Click the 'Save' buttontoretainthese settings after you close the program.

Some printersallow analphanumericIDtobeassociatedwithaspecifictrayand
tobe used inthe {escape}&n#W commandinsteadofselectingthetrayby
number.Whenadding media,ifthereisadefaulttraynumber alreadyfilledin
then that showsit wasalready defined.Ifanull trayistypedit will remove the
definition.

Copying and saving pages
Whenyou haveopenedaPCLformatprint file youcancopythe text onthepage
tothe Windows clipboardandpasteit intoother applications.
The ‘Save Subset...’optionallowsyoutocutoutasectionofaprint fileandsave it
forreprinting,includinganynecessaryfonts,macrosandenvironmentdefinitions.
Thisisauseful optionwhenpartofaPCLprintrunhasfailed.
Tocopythetextonapage
1. Use the cursor tomark roundapiece oftext.Ifyou donot select anything the
whole page will be copied.
2. Choose'Copy' from the Editmenu(or useCtrl+Ins). The text isplaced inthe
clipboardready for pastingelsewhere.
Tocopythewholepage
Choose'CopyPage' from theEdit menu (oruse Ctrl+C).
Tosavepagestoafile
1. Choose 'Save Subset...' from the File menu.
OR
Choose 'Export...' from the File menu, then select 'Subset' asthe format.
