1.1 What use is it?
WYSIWYG
(what you see is what you get) sometimes is considered all the rage, sometimes
frownedupon. Dowereallywantit? Wrongquestion. Therightquestioniswhat wewantfrom
it. Exceptwhen finetuning the layout, wedon’twant touse printer fonts for on-screen text
editing. Thelowresolutionandcontrastofacomputerscreenrenderallbutthecoarsestprinter
fonts(thoseforlow-qualitynewsprint)unappealing,andthemarginsandpaginationoftheprint
arenotwanted on thescreen, either. On the other hand, morecomplexvisual compositions
likemath formulasand tablescan’teasily betaken inwhen seen onlyin thesource. preview-
latex strikesa balance: it only uses graphicrenditions oftheoutputforcertain, configurable
constructs, does thisonlywhen told, and then right in the sourcecode. Switching back and
forth between the source and preview is easy and natural and can be done for each image
independently. Behindthescenesofpreview-latex,asophisticatedframeworkofotherprograms
like‘dvipng’, DvipsandGhostscript areemployed togetherwith aspecial L

Onceactivated,preview-latexanditsdocumentationwillbeaccessibleviaitsmenus(notethat

Xdocument (a
sampledocumentcirc.texisincludedinthedistribution,butmostdocumentsincludingmath
and/or figures should do), you can use its menu or C-cC-pC-d (for ‘Preview/Document’).
Previewswill nowbegenerated forvarious objects in yourdocument. You can use the time
totakeashortlookattheothermenuentriesand keybindingsin the‘Preview’menu. You’ll
seethepreviewedobjectschangeintoaroadworkssignwhen preview-latexhasdeterminedjust
whatitisgoingtopreview. Notethatyoucanfreelynavigatethebufferwhilethisisgoingon.
Whentheprocessisfinishedyouwillseetheobjectstypesetinyourbuffer.
It isabad idea, however, toedit the bufferbeforetheroadworks signs appear, since that
is the moment when the correlation between the original text and the buffer locations gets
established. Ifthebufferchangesbeforethatpointoftime,thepreviewswillnotbeplacedwhere
theybelong. Ifyoudowanttochangesomeobviouserroryoujustspotted,werecommendyou
stopthebackgroundprocessbypressingC-cC-k.
