How to log in 
You can log in through the University of Essex Online web site or go direct to the learning platform. 
To access the learning platform please follow the steps below: 
Step 1: Go to www.my-course.co.uk
and  
Step 2: Input your user name and password.   
Please note you will be provided with a temporary password when you enrol on your course and you will be 
prompted to change this when you first log in. You are able to change this password later should you need to.

Log in to your course via www.my-course.co.uk
Click on My Moodle and from the drop down menu click My Profile 
On the left of your screen, under the Navigation menu, you will find a 
menu entitled Settings, click here to change your password. 
Create a new password in the empty fields provided ensuring that the 
new password fulfils the following criteria:  
at least eight characters, at least one digit(s), at least one lower case 
letter(s) and at least one upper case letter(s). 
If you have any problems: 
Re-type your password carefully.  Remember that if the new 
password isn’t entered in both fields correctly it will not accept the 
change.

Step 3: Once you have logged in, click on My Courses where you will see 
the modules for which you are currently enrolled. Click on the relevant 
module and your studies can start. 
New users should take a look at the Moodle User Guide on the learning 
platform for instructions on how to navigate the platform. As future modules 
become available, they will automatically appear as links in My Courses.

Starting the course 
You will start your course with the Introduction to Online Learning and Personal Development module. This 
module will introduce you to the basics of online learning before you can start the course specific learning. 
The precise details of how to work through each module  is explained in the module introduction and your first 
tutor-led Q&A session in week one. We recommend that you have regular contact with your student adviser and 
tutor during this module.  Their contact details can be found on the learning platform in the Student Support and 
Tutor Office sections and in section 7.1 of this handbook.

We are here to help you.  Whatever your question or problem, whether it is related directly to your studies or to 
anything affecting your studies, we will try and work with you to find a solution. Therefore, never hesitate to 
contact us if you are at all worried about anything, no matter how trivial it may appear.   
We have several support functions to help you. 
2.1   
Student support 
We recognise that students, especially those who have been out of education for some time and are studying 
remotely online, may need extra support, especially at the beginning. 
The role of the student adviser is to support you throughout the course and be in regular contact with members of 
staff who are critical to your success. Our student advisers know who, how and when to contact others, letting 
you focus on your studies rather than chase around trying to find help and support. 
You can contact your student adviser by phone, email or Skype and if they are unavailable, they will get back to 
you in line with our agreed service levels, which can be found in the Student Support section of the learning 
platform and in section 7.1 of this handbook. 
The student support team will: 
Welcome you onto the course and conduct a welcome session to include advice on how/where to access help 
and support. 
Contact you at regular intervals to establish a close rapport with you and ensure that you are comfortable with 
all aspects of the programme. 
Monitor your attendance on the platform and contact you in the event of you not meeting our attendance 
requirements and if necessary alert the tutor to determine an appropriate course of action. 
Monitor your progress and if your grades are falling below the ‘pass threshold’ try to determine the 
cause
and 
help to get you back on track.    
Consult with you on your progression and enrol you on course modules. 
You will be assigned to a dedicated student adviser who will provide you with a contact telephone number and an 
email address. If you can’t locate these details, call 0113 388 8877 or em

On occasions your student adviser may not be able to help you with a particular issue if it is of a specialist nature. 
Our role then is to find someone that can help either within University of Essex Online, the wider University of

We have made arrangements with an external company to provide you with access to telephone based 
counselling support and advice on a wide range of issues including relationships, budgeting, managing change 
and stress. For details and contact information, refer to the Student Services section on the learning platform.

Library services  
University of Essex Online students have access to a range of online materials.  
As part of your enrolment you are provided with a core text for each module. The library services offered are to 
allow you access to additional resources such as on-line journals, databases and eBooks.  You will be advised 
throughout your module as and when these resources are required for your studies. 
Kaplan online library 
This service is provided to us by the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Although the library contains printed as 
well as online materials, only the online materials are available to students studying in the UK. 
You will be provided with log-in details for these resources by your student adviser. The access provided is for 
your use only.  Please keep these details safe and do not divulge them to other parties. 
University of Essex -  Albert Sloman Library 
One you have completed your University of Essex registration, you can also access the online library resources 
available from the Albert Sloman Library using the University of Essex student details supplied by your student 
adviser.

Kaplan University Writing Centre 
In addition to the writing skills, instruction and feedback you will receive in your course tutors the Kaplan 
University Writing Centre offers free reviews for your final essay assignments. Kaplan University tutors will assess 
your writing and provide feedback within 72 hours.  
The purpose of this service is to provide suggestions for writing improvement, especially in terms of grammar, 
mechanics and organisation. Rather than editing or rewriting your paper, the feedback service will provide you 
with a better understanding of areas that need improvement or development. Students may submit one essay 
per module for review and feedback.

3.1   
Progression 
After the successful completion of the first two modules of the course, students who are achieving good grades 
are able to study two modules at a time provided the relevant modules are running and available. 
You must complete a course or level prior to starting a new course or level.  However, students that complete a 
level and wish to proceed to the next level at the earliest opportunity and before the next scheduled Examination 
Board may commence the next level on a provisional basis subject to all the modules of the previous level having 
been completed and the internal examiners being satisfied that the provisional marks would ensure that the 
student will achieve 120 credits.  In the event that the Examination Board decides that the student has not met the 
requirements to progress, the student’s studies will be suspended pending successful completion of the previous 
level’s modules.  
Your study plan is discussed on a regular basis with your student adviser.  Study breaks can be granted on 
completion of a module.  Once a module is commenced you are committed to completing the module (approx 10 
weeks).  Part completed modules will be presented to an Examination Board and may result in a failed attempt. 
We may revise course dates in the event that demand for particular modules is different from our current 
forecasts. 
3.2 
Maximum allowed periods of study 
The University of Essex set maximum allowed periods of study for their qualifications.  For part time courses, 
these are as follows:

The maximum period of study is set from the date when you are first admitted to your course.  Transfers of 
courses are still included in the original maximum period.  Unless there are exceptional reasons, period of 
intermission will count towards the original maximum period. 
A minimum of 15 credits must be achieved in any 12-month period of study unless there are substantiated 
extenuating circumstances.

A typical study schedule  
At the start of a new module, familiarise yourself with the overview of the module content and take notes of the 
dates and times of the Q & A 
sessions. Modules are divided into units and each unit represents a week’s work. 
Assignment deadlines vary and are listed in each module. 
A typical fortnight’s study could include:
Week 1
Click on the reading tab on the platform to find out what background reading you need to do. This could be 
chapters in your textbook, lecture notes posted on the platform, journals and other texts from the online library 
or articles on recommended websites. Contact your tutor if there are areas that you don’t understand
or want 
to explore further. 
Post your initial contribution on the online discussion forum and respond to other students’ postings. The 
discussion forum is based around a pre-determined topic.  
Start planning your assignment. This is typically a short piece of work that you will send to the tutor via the 
learning platform. The assignment will draw upon readings, learning activities and discussions to demonstrate 
knowledge and understanding. Where applicable, you may be asked to link assignments to relevant workplace 
experiences. 
Week 2
Do further reading as directed. 
Whenever possible, attend the online Q&A session with your tutor which will be held in the evening. If you 
can’t attend, listen to the recording later on.
Participate in activities such as self-test quizzes, web-based field trips and other online learning activities. 
Continue to contribute to the discussion threads.  
Keep working on the assignment you started in the previous week and submit it through the learning platform 
by the deadline, usually at the end of the unit. 
Reflect on what you have learned through readings, discussions and activities in the journal. 
Keep checking your grades through your online gradebook.

Module completion 
Most modules last ten weeks. Exceptions are work based learning modules and Level 6 projects which are 
delivered over fifteen or twenty weeks. 
Typical modules are structured with regular assessments taking place in the form of discussion contributions, 
regular assignments, an end of module project and a journal report. 
Within two weeks of completing your module you will be given a provisional mark pending the meeting of the 
Examination Board.  Your student adviser will contact you about progression to your next module which typically 
starts after a one-week break. 
The procedure to follow in the event that you do not complete or pass your module is detailed in section 4.6. 
3.5   
Course materials 
Unlike most other degree courses, we include all essential core text books in our course fees.  However, we may 
from time to time identify other useful reading materials which, although not essential, you may find useful.  These 
are not included in the course fee. 
Modules will also provide optional reading. You should, where possible, obtain access to these publications. 
Our platform also has a document sharing feature where tutors and students can upload useful documents. 
3.6   
Work based learning (WBL) 
What is work based learning? 
The term work based Learning (WBL) is used to describe independent learning through work. At its core is the 
concept of ‘Experiential Learning’ based on Kolb’s Learning Cycle (1984).
Put simply this means that the module 
focuses on work based project-related activities that are individual to you and your work experiences. WBL is not 
about workplace training but is about doing something useful for yourself, your job or future job and your 
employer using the academic skills you are gaining.  
Throughout the module your experience in the workplace is supplemented with reading and reference to 
theoretical material so that your actions and decision-making in the workplace are grounded and informed by 
theory and not just done 
‘because that is the way we have always done it’ 
without rationale or justification. 
The WBL modules at Level 4 and Level 5 follow a more self-managed approach than other modules, but you 
shouldn’t worry about this as you are supported throughout by your tutor, student adviser and a work based 
mentor that you select yourself. 
What will actually happen in WBL? 
WBL is loosely divided into three parts.  The example below refers to the WBL module at Level 4 which lasts 
fifteen weeks. 
Units 1-6: Designing the project plan  
In this first six weeks - the main taught section of the module - you focus on drawing up your personal Project 
Plan which outlines the project title, the activities that you are going to carry out, including primary and secondary 
research. You will do this with support from your tutor, your fellow students and your work based mentor (once 
you have appointed him/her). Throughout this time you will be involved in regular discussion contributions, a tutor 
one-to-one and seminars. You will also have the opportunity to receive feedback on your Project Plan before you 
submit it for marking at the end of Unit 6.
