bydouble-sidedadhesivetape.Acylindricalsample,offixeddimensions,isinsertedinthe
sampleholderanditsprotrusionadjustedandsetusingtheintegralmicrometer.Thesample
holdereitherfixedorrotating,travelsoverthesurfaceoftheabrasivepaperat0.32m/secunder
aloadingofeither5or10newtonsforasetdistance.Anadjustablerotarycamallowsthe
sampletotravel10,20,30and40metres.Oncompletionofthetestthesampleisremovedand
thevolumelossdeterminedbyweighingandcalculation.
Theabrasiveresistanceofthecompoundcanthenbedeterminedbyrelatingthetestresultsto

Theclothismovedslowlyatrightanglestothetestpiecesothetestpieceisalwaysincontact
withnewabrasivecloth,maintainingconstantcuttingpower.
Themachinegivesanaverageofabrasionthroughtheentirethicknessofsamples.Thiscan
beachievedbyabradingthetwotestpiecesfromalternativesidesatthesametime.Those

testpiecesis0.56kg/cm2(8lb/in2).Dialgaugesmeasuringthicknesslossareastandardfeature
ofthemachine.
Toensurethetestresultsobtainedareaccurateitisnecessarytoremovethedebriscausedby
abradingthesample.Thisisachievedbyapplyingavacuumtothetestarea.TheSATRA
machinehasabuilt-invacuumextractionpointwhereanormaldomesticvacuumcleaner(not

footlengthisappropriatefortheshoebeingconsidered.TheSATRAsizestickisaconvenient
waytoachievethis.Shapedlikeacalliper,thisdevicehasdualscales–Englishshoesizesand
millimetres.Sincethefootspreadswhenapersonisstandingthisisthebestwaytomeasure
thefoot(withweighton).ThescalesontheSATRAsizestickareadjustedtomeasurefeetin
thisway.Bothleftandrightfeetcanbemeasuredusingthedeviceandthescalesaresoangled
thateitherscalecanbeeasilyread.
TheSATRAsizestickiseasytouse–simplyplacethefixedanvilbehindtheheelandmove
theslidingcalliperuptothelongesttoeandreadtheindicatedsize.

Thisisanexcellenttestforfibreboardssuchasinsoleforepartsnormallyflexedordeformedin
wear.Themachineassessesqualityanddurabilitybyrepeatedflexingofthespecimenthrough
180°.Themachinecanalsobeusedtodeterminetheeffectofheatontheinsolecausedby
direct-onmouldingorvulcanising.
Thesix10mmwidetestpiecesareclampedinthejawsanda2kilogrammeweightissuspended
onthelowerend.Duringthetest,thejawsarerotatedthrough180°(90°eachsideofvertical)
untilthetestpiecebreaks.Eachsamplehasanindividualcounterwhichstopswhenthesample
breaks.Thisindicatesthenumberofflexestofailureofeachtestpiece.

Thisdeterminestheflexingpropertiesofpenetration-resistantinserts(midsoles)usedinsafety
footwear.TheSATRASTM441isasixstationmachinewithtwobanksofthreestationson
eithersideofthecentralbodyofthemachine.Theinserts,usuallyofsteel,arelocatedinthe
machineclamps,togetherwiththecorrectinterlayers(supplied)andfreeendrestingagainstthe
flexingbar.Theangleofflexcanbeadjustedtomeettheappropriatestandard.
Atimerisprovidedtostopthebaroncetherequirednumberofflexeshasbeenreachedsothat
the inserts s being g tested can be inspected. The machine is designed to operate at t 16
cycles/second.

100flexes/minutecanbefitted.
Thistestshouldnearlyalwaysbecarriedoutatlowtemperaturessoamodel,STM141F,isfitted
intoarefrigeratedcabinetwiththemotordriveandcontrolontheoutsideofthecabinet(see

TheRossflexingtestforsolingmaterialsrequiresaninitialcutoftheparticularsizetobemadeinthe
testpieceinthecorrectposition.Thisjigenablesthecuttobemadeeasilyandinthecorrectposition
withouttheneedformeasuringthetestpiece.
Thejigbaseisprovidedwithalongitudinalslotintowhichthetestpiececanbeplacedandlocated
againstanendstop.Thechiselisthenguidedbythepinstoensurethatthecutismadecorrectly.

ofshoesolesduetoflexinginwear.Thetestisconductedbyfixingthesoleunittoanendless
beltwhichpassesaround two pulleysof differingdiameters.The largermaindrive pulley
providestherotationwhilethesmallerofthetwopulleysdeterminestheseverityoftheflexing
action.Theequipmentissuppliedcompletewiththreesmallpulleysofvaryingdiametersto
increaseordecreasetheamountofflexing.
Theendlessbeltcanusuallyaccommodatesixsoleunits,subjecttothestyleandsize.Soleunits
arebondedtothebeltusingastrongadhesive.Whenverystiffsoleunitsaretesteditmaybe
necessarytostitchthetoeofthesoleunittothebelt.
Thebeltismadeofcanvasanditsconstructionallowsthenumberofcompletecyclestobecounted
whichisequaltothenumberofflexesofthetestsample.
Theflexingareaisprovidedwithafullguardinterlockedwiththemachinecontrolstoensurethe
guardcannotbeopeneduntilthebelthasstopped.
Thecontrolcabinetlocatedatthesideofthemachinehousesthemotordrivecontrolsaswellas
acounterwhichcanbepre-settostopthemachinewhenapredeterminednumberofflexeshas
beenreached.Thisallowstheexaminationofthesoleunitsatintervalsthroughoutthetestduration.
Thestandardmachineissuppliedasabenchtopmachine,althoughaseparatestandcanbe
suppliedatadditionalcost.
Alowtemperaturevariantallowstheflexingtobecarriedoutatsub-zerotemperatures,enabling
theincreasedriskofcrackingduetocoldweather.Thecompleteflexingmechanismisbuiltintoan
insulatedchamberwherethetemperaturecanbereducedtoapre-setlevel.Thelowesttemperature
achievableonthismodel(STM612F)is-20°Csubjecttoambienttemperature.STM612Fis
suppliedcompletewithastandthathousestherefrigerationunit.

TheSTM184flexingmachinehasbeendevelopedtoassesstheflexingenduranceofcompleted
footwearinwetanddryconditions.Themachineissuppliedinbothsingleortwinstationformats
andtheactionsimulatestheflexingoffootwearduringwear.Theangleofflexisadjustableupto
50°.Themachinemaybeusedtopredictthefailureoffootwearinwear.Itisparticularlyusefulin
assessingproblemsassociatedwithbottomconstruction.Footwearisclampedtothemachineat
thetoeendusingtheappropriatetoeclampfromoneoffivepairssupplied.Theheelendissecured
totheflexingbar.Apredeterminingcounterisfittedandoncetheappropriatenumberofflexeshas
beenregistered,itwillstopthemachinesothattheshoecanbeinspected.Themovingpartsofthe
machinearecoveredbyahingedguardwhichisfittedwiththelatestsafetydevicetoprevent
accesswhilethemachineisstillinuse.Themachineisrobustandnon-corrosivematerialsare
usedwhereapplicableinitsconstruction.

TheSATRABallyflexometeristheinternationally-acceptedmethodfortheassessmentoftheflexing
enduranceoflightleathersandtheirsurfacefinishes.Thetendencyforcrackstoforminthecreases
causedbywalkingcanalsobedetermined.TheBallyflexerhasadifferentflexingmechanismto
theSATRAvampflexer(STM601)andiscomplementarytoit.Itisalsousedtoprecondition
samplespriortodeterminingwatervapourpermeability–particularlyinassessinguppersfor
protectivefootwear.
The twelvestationsareconvenientlyarrangedforuseraccessandsamplemounting.Apre-
determinedcounterisfittedtothemachine,allowingittobeoperatedwithoutcontinuousattendance
asthemachinestopsautomaticallyoncethesetcountisreached.
Themachineissimpletouse,benchmountedandsuppliedreadytoconnecttotheelectricalsupply.
Thereisafourstationversionofthismachine(SATRARef.STM702).Lowtemperatureversions

Thisassessesthetendencyofalltypesofuppermaterials,clothingleathersandupholstery
coveringstocrackorbreakasaresultofflexinginwear.Itisequallysuitablefortestingleather,
plasticcoatedfabrics,poromericsandwovenfabrics.Thismethodcanalsobeusedtotest
seam construction during flexing. The crease formed d by this method d is an accurate
representationofthoseformedinnormalwear.Themachineconfigurationallowsaminimum
ofeightsamplestobetestedsimultaneouslyanditisfittedwithacounterwhichallowsthetotal
numberofflexestobepre-set.
