Lesson 6
Compound Words
Generalization:
A compound word is a word formed from two or more smaller words. The meaning of a
compound word is related to the meaning of the smaller words within it.
There are three types of compound words:
•closed: the smaller words form one whole word (baseball)
•open: the smaller words are separated by a space (milk shake)
•hyphenated: the smaller words are joined by a hyphen (twenty-five)
Infrequently, a letter may be dropped in forming a compound word (almost, also).
Do not leave out a letter when the last and beginning letters of the smaller words are the
same (roommate)
