Text Boxes
A text box can be inserted into a document to provide a quote or to emphasize an important point.
A text box can be a simple box or customized as desired.
A Sidebar is a special type of text box.
Inserting a Text Box
Click in the document where the text box is to be placed.
On the Ribbon, click on the Insert tab.
In the Text group, click on Text Box and choose the desired type of text box.
Type or paste in the desired text in the text box.
The text box expands for fit the text.
Drawing a Text Box
A text box can be added by drawing it in the desired location.
On the Ribbon, click on the Insert tab.
In the Text group, click on Text Box and choose Draw Text Box.
Click and drag in the document to create the text box in the desired location and of the desired size.
Type or paste in the desired text in the text box.
Note: A drawn text box does not expand to fit text that is entered.
Note: The text wrap of a drawn text box is In Front of Text.
Formatting the Text in the Text Box
Highlight the text in the text box.
On the Ribbon, click on the Home tab.
In the Font group, use the tools to format the text as desired.
In the Paragraph group, use the tools to position the text in the text box as desired.

Text Wrap of a Text Box
How text wraps around the text box can be adjusted.
Click on the text box.
Click on the Layout Options button next to the text box.
Square or Tight are the usual choices.
Text Wrapping with the Ribbon
Text wrapping can be done with the Ribbon.
Click on the text box.
On the Ribbon, click on the Drawing Tools Format tab.
In the Arrange group, click on Wrap Text and choose the
desired wrap.

Text Wrapping by Right Clicking
Text wrapping can be done by right clicking.
Right click on the border of the text box.
Choose Wrap Text, and then choose the desired wrap.
Square or Tight are the usual choices.
Resizing a Text Box
The size of a text box can be adjusted.
Click in the text box.
Move the cursor over a button at the corner or in the middle of one of the sides. (The
cursor changes to a two-headed arrow.)
Click and drag to the desired size.
Rotating a Text Box
A text box can be rotated.
Click on the text box.
Click on the circular arrow above the text box and drag to the desired angle
OR on the Ribbon, click on the Drawing Tools Format tab.
In the Arrange group, click on Rotate Objects and choose the desired rotation.
Placement of a Text Box
The text box can be moved to the desired location on the page.
Click in the text box.
Place the cursor over the border of the text box. (The cursor becomes a four-headed arrow.)
Drag the text box to the desired location on the page.

Text Box Position on the Page
The position of a text box on the page can be set to one of nine static positions.
Click on the text box.
On the Ribbon, click on the Drawing Tools Format tab.
In the Arrange group, click on Position and choose the desired position of the text box.

Position in Top Left with Square Text Wrapping
o
Position in Top Center with Square Text Wrapping
o
Position in Top Right with Square Text Wrapping
o
Position in Middle Left with Square Text Wrapping
o
Position in Middle Center with Square Text Wrapping
o
Position in Middle Right with Square Text Wrapping
o
Position in Bottom Left with Square Text Wrapping

Position in Bottom Right with Square Text Wrapping
The text box wrap is set to Square and the text box is placed in the selected
location on the page.
To change the position of the text box on the page, click on the text box and drag it to the desired location.
Modifying a Text Box
A text box can be changed in various ways.
Some of the changes that can be made include changing the direction of the text, the shape of the text box,
the fill color, the outline color, and various effects such as a shadow, reflection, or glow.
Changing the Text Direction
The direction of the text in the text box can be changed.
Click on the text box.
On the Ribbon, click on the Drawing Tools Format tab.
In the Text group, click on Text Direction and choose the desired direction.
o
The options include Horizontal, Rotate all text 90°, and Rotate all text 270°.
Note: Text Direction Options…
offers the same choices.
Changing the Text Box Shape
The shape of the text box can be changed.
Click on the text box.
On the Ribbon, click on the Drawing Tools Format tab.
In the Insert Shapes group, click on Edit Shape.
Click on Change Shape and choose the desired shape from the list.
o
The groups of shapes include Rectangles, Basic Shapes, Black Arrows,
Equation Shapes, Flowchart, Stares and Banners, and Callouts.
Adjust the size of the text box to fit the text.
Customizing a Shape
A shape can be edited by changing the shape points.

Text Box Styles and Frames
A text box can be given a frame or border of various styles.
Click on the text box.
On the Ribbon, click on the Drawing Tools Format tab.
In the Shape Styles group, hold the mouse over each text box style to see
a preview of the style applied to the text box.
Use the up and down arrow buttons to scroll through the rows of styles.
Use the More button to display all of the rows of styles.
Click on the desired text box style.
OR right click and use Styles.
Customizing the Text Box Style
A text box style can be changed as desired.
To change the fill of the text box, see Changing the Text Box Fill on page 5.
To change the outline of the text box, see Changing the Text Box Outline on page 6.
To change the effects applied to the text box, see Changing the Text Box Effects on page 6.
Changing the Text Box Fill
The fill of the text box can be changed.
Click on the text box.
On the Ribbon, click on the Drawing Tools Format tab.
In the Shape Styles group, click on Shape Fill and choose the desired color.
Clicking on
More Fill Colors…
provides more choices of colors.
Note: If No Fill is selected the text box will be transparent and anything
behind can be seen.
Filling the Text Box with a Picture
A text box can be filled with a picture.
Click on the text box.
On the Ribbon, click on the Drawing Tools Format tab.
In the Shape Styles group, click on Shape Fill and choose
Picture…
.
Navigate to the location of the desired picture and click on it.
Click on Insert.
Since the size of the picture is adjusted to fill the text box, adjustments may
be necessary.
To adjust picture in the text box:
o
Adjust the dimensions of the text box as needed.
o
Click on the Picture Tools Format tab.
o
In the Adjust group, click on Corrections and choose the desired option.
o
In the Adjust group, click on Color and choose the desired option.

Filling the Text Box with a Gradient
A text box can be filled with a gradient.
Click on the text box.
On the Ribbon, click on the Drawing Tools Format tab.
In the Shape Styles group, click on Shape Fill and choose the desired color
of the gradient.
In the Shape Styles group, click on Shape Fill, choose Gradient, and then
choose the desired gradient.
Filling the Text Box with a Texture
A text box can be filled with a texture.
Click on the text box.
On the Ribbon, click on the Drawing Tools Format tab.
In the Shape Styles group, click on Shape Fill, choose Texture, and then choose the desired texture.
The texture is placed behind the text of the text box and adjustments may be needed.
To adjust picture in the text box:
o
Click on the Picture Tools Format tab.
o
In the Adjust group, click on Corrections and choose the desired option.
o
In the Adjust group, click on Color and choose the desired option.
Changing the Text Box Outline
The outline of the text box can be changed.
Click on the text box.
On the Ribbon, click on the Drawing Tools Format tab.
In the Shape Styles group, click on Shape Outline.
Choose the desired color for the outline.
Clicking on
More Outline Colors…
provides more choices of colors.
Note: Choosing No Outline removes the text box outline.
Changing the Thickness of the Outline
The thickness of the text box outline can be changed.
On the Ribbon, click on the Drawing Tools Format tab.
In the Shape Styles group, click on Shape Outline.
Click on Weight and choose the desired thickness of the outline.
Choices range from ¼ pt to 6 pt.
Changing the Line Style of the Outline
The style of line of the text box outline can be changed.
On the Ribbon, click on the Drawing Tools Format tab.
In the Shape Styles group, click on Shape Outline.
Click on Dashes and choose the desired style of line.
Choices include a sold line and a variety of dash lines.
Changing the Text Box Effects
Various effects can be applied to the text box.
The choices include Preset, Shadow , Reflection, Glow , Soft Edges, Bevel, and 3-D Rotation .

Text Box Presets
Presets are effects with different settings.
Adjustments can be made to Presets.
Click on the text box.
On the Ribbon, click on the Drawing Tools Format tab.
In the Shape Styles group, click on Shape Effects.
Click on Preset and choose the desired option.
Text Box Shadow
Shadow gives the choice of a number of different shadows to be cast by the text box.
Click on the text box.
On the Ribbon, click on the Drawing Tools Format tab.
In the Shape Styles group, click on Shape Effects.
Click on Shadow and choose the desired option.
The options include various choice for Outer, Inner, or Perspective shadows.

Text Box Reflection
Reflection gives a number of different reflections of the text box.
Click on the text box.
On the Ribbon, click on the Drawing Tools Format tab.
In the Shape Styles group, click on Shape Effects.

Text Box Glow
Glow gives a number of different glows for the text box.
Click on the text box.
On the Ribbon, click on the Drawing Tools Format tab.
In the Shape Styles group, click on Shape Effects.
Click on Glow and choose the desired glow.

15.
Text Box Soft Edges
Soft Edges gives a number of different soft edges for the text box.
Click on the text box.
On the Ribbon, click on the Drawing Tools Format tab.
In the Shape Styles group, click on Shape Effects.
Click on Soft Edges and choose the desired size of the soft edge.

Text Box Bevel
Bevel gives a number of different bevels for the text box.
Click on the text box.
On the Ribbon, click on the Drawing Tools Format tab.
In the Shape Styles group, click on Shape Effects.
Click on Soft Edges and choose the desired bevel.

Text Box 3-D Rotation
3-D Rotation gives a number of different 3-D rotations for the text box.
Click on the text box.
On the Ribbon, click on the Drawing Tools Format tab.
In the Shape Styles group, click on Shape Effects.
Click on 3-D Rotation and choose the desired 3-D rotation.
The three groups of options are Parallel, Perspective, or Oblique.

Sidebars
A sidebar is a special type of text box.
A sidebar has a title section at the top and a place for text.
As indicated by the name, a sidebar usually is on the side of
the page.
Inserting a Sidebar
Click in the document.
On the Ribbon, click on the Insert tab.
In the Text group, click on Text Box and choose the desired
type of sidebar.
Click on Sidebar Title and enter the desired title.
Click in the text area and type or paste in the desired text.
Formatting the Text in a Sidebar
Highlight the text in the sidebar.
On the Ribbon, click on the Home tab.
In the Font group, use the tools to format the text as desired.
In the Paragraph group, use the tools to position the text in the text box as desired.
Text Placement in a Sidebar
Text can be placed in the sidebar in a number of ways.
Click in the sidebar.
On the Ribbon, click on the Drawing Tools
Format tab.
To change the direction of the text:
o
In the Text group, click on Text Direction.
o
Choose the desired angle for the text.
To change the alignment of the text:
o
In the Text group, click on Align Text.
o
Choose the desired alignment of the text.

Resizing a Sidebar
The size of a sidebar can be adjusted.
Click in the sidebar.
Buttons appear at the corners and the middle of each side.
Move the cursor over one of the buttons. (The cursor changes to a two-headed arrow.)
Click and drag to the desired size.
Rotating a Sidebar
A sidebar can be rotated but seems to work best when vertical or horizontal.
Click in the sidebar.
Click on the circular arrow and drag the sidebar to the desired angle.
Moving a Sidebar
A sidebar can be moved to the desired location on the page.
Click in the sidebar.
Move the cursor to the edge of the sidebar. (The cursor changes to a four-headed arrow.)
Click and drag the sidebar to the desired location.
Modifying a Sidebar
A sidebar can be modified in many ways.
To change the frame or border of a sidebar, see Text Box Styles and Frames on page 5.
To change the fill of a sidebar, see Changing the Text Box Fill on page 5.
To change the outline of a sidebar, see Changing the Text Box Outline on page 6.

Shapes
A wide variety of shapes can be inserted into a document.
Any of the shapes can be can have text placed in it.
The groups of shapes include Lines, Rectangles, Basic Shapes,
Block Arrows, Equation Shapes, Flowchart, Stars and Banners,
and Callouts.
Inserting a Shape
Click in the document where the shape is to be placed.
On the Ribbon, click on the Insert tab.
In the Illustrations group, click on Shapes and choose the
desired shape.
Click and drag in the document to draw the shape.
Resizing a Shape
The size of a shape can be changed.
Click on the shape.
Buttons appear at the corners and the middle of each side.
Move the cursor over one of the buttons. (The cursor
changes to a two-headed arrow.)
Click and drag to the desired size.
Rotating a Shape
A shape can be rotated.
Click on the shape.
Click on the circular arrow and drag the shape to the desired angle.
Adjusting a Shape
Some shapes can be adjusted in their shape and dimensions.
For example, a six sided figure has a yellow box which can be adjusted to change the angle at that point.
The six sided figure can be adjusted to have a wider top or a
narrower top as seen in the examples to the right.
Click on the shape.
Click on the yellow box and adjust the shape as desired.
Adding Text to a Shape
Text can be added to a shape.
Right click on the shape and choose Add Text.
Type in the desired text.
Note: The shape does not expand to accommodate the text. The size of the shape or the size of the font may
need to be adjusted to make all of the text visible in the shape.
Formatting the Text in a Shape
Highlight the text in the shape.
On the Ribbon, click on the Home tab.
In the Font group, use the tools to format the text as desired.
In the Paragraph group, use the tools to position the text in the shape as desired.
