WSI ZoomViewer Challenges
Same-Origin Policy - The policy permits scripts running on pages
originating from the same site to access each other's Document
Object Model (DOM) with no specific restrictions, but prevents
access to DOM on different sites. [Wikipedia]
Why it matters?
Unable to fetching image meta-data from asynchronous JavaScript
call, unless the image server is on the same website.
JavaScript call toDataURL() which is essential API call for taking a
snapshot of the viewing window is not allowed unless Same-Origin
Policy is satisfied.
Same-Origin Policy Workaround
Use a custom HTTP proxy server deployed on the same
domain as the viewer to redirect calls for requesting WSI meta
data and return the response wrapped as JSONP object which
is allowed under Same-Origin Policy
Same effect can be achieved by utilizing 3
party proxy site
If snapshot functionality is desired, then ALL HTTP requests to
WSI meta data and tiles need to be redirected through HTTP
proxy server
More work ahead
Support for other vendors including OpenSlide server
Implement slide annotations
Implement measuring tool
Implement viewing of other related images such as image
labels or macro images
WSI ZoomViewer is currently being integrated into UPMC
Pathology Consultation Portal as well as UPMC KingMed sites
as an alternative to a Java based viewer.
It will allow medical professionals to user their phones and iPads to
do remote consultation of cases.
Once the Java version of the WSI viewer is retired, this will relieve
UPMC IT from the support nightmares associated with Java
based technologies.
