C.Y. O’CONNOR AWARD FOR
EXCELLENCE IN ENGINEERING
AND TECHNOLOGY
For excellence in engineering,
technology, medical technology,
information technology and/or technical
research and development.
Judging Criteria
Please include a statement covering
the performance of the business against
each of the judging criteria listed below:
1. Evidence of a continuing level of
technical excellence in engineering,
technology, medical technology,
information technology, technical
research and development. Please
provide a brief outline of the
technology or the research project.
2. Demonstrated commercial returns,
plus forward estimates where
relevant. Evidence of improved
competitiveness in national and/or
international markets including any
identifi ed fl ow-on benefi ts to other
business activities or sectors
of industry.
3. Evidence of innovation,
entrepreneurship, commitment
to quality and vision.
4. Evidence of higher productivity
resulting from the application of
technology, and integration of
technology into business practices.
5. Demonstrated implementation of
research and development.
6. Evidence of a sound capital base
including:
• Sustainable net worth (total assets
minus liabilities);
• Sound gearing (debt/equity ratio
within acceptable limits for the
relevant industry norm);
• Suffi cient working capital (cash
fl ow and fi nancial resources).
7. A summary, not exceeding one
type written page, detailing any
additional factors the applicant
considers relevant to their application
for an award. This can include the
demonstration of how local Western
Australian inputs (as opposed to
imported content and expertise), have
been applied throughout the fi rm’s
business processes.
MARKETING AND DESIGN
EXCELLENCE AWARD
For outstanding achievement or
excellence in a marketing campaign or
implementation of design.
Judging Criteria
Entries are invited from organisations
which have designed and implemented
marketing activities during the last
year, or who have undertaken design
and implemented the marketing of that
design work.
Entries will be judged by reference
to the underlying design or marketing
approach to a product or service, its
innovative qualities, target market
research, strategic planning, eventual
impact and fi nancial results.
Please include a statement covering
the performance of the business against
each of the following judging criteria:
1. Evidence that the organisation has
identifi ed its markets, accurately
determined customer needs and
perceptions, and incorporated this
information into a product/service
design or marketing approach.
2. Evidence that the organisation has a
demonstrated commitment to design
or marketing excellence and product/
service quality.
3. Evidence of innovation, creativity,
and ingenuity in the development
and execution of the product/service
design or the marketing approach.
4. The strategies employed to address
the scale and complexity of the task.
5. Results:
• Effectiveness and impact of the
design or marketing campaign; and
• Return on investment (and forward
projections of the economic impact
where applicable).
6. Evidence of a sound capital base
including:
• Sustainable net worth (total assets
minus liabilities);
• Sound gearing (debt/equity ratio
within acceptable limits for the
relevant industry norm); and
• Suffi cient working capital (cash
fl ow and fi nancial resources).
7. A summary, not exceeding one
typewritten page, detailing any
additional factors the applicant
considers relevant to their application
for an Award. This can include the
demonstration of how local Western
Australian inputs (as opposed to
imported content and expertise),
have been applied throughout the
fi rm’s business processes.
INNOVATION EXCELLENCE
AWARD
For outstanding achievement or
excellence in developing an innovative
commercial product, process, service
or technology.
The Innovation Excellence Award
recognises businesses that are
contributing to the advancement of
the economy through their innovation.
Qualifying projects must be technically
sound and intrinsically different from
comparable products, processes or
services and demonstrate commercial
viability for this category.
Applicants should demonstrate a clear
understanding of the market potential
for their innovation and a realistic
assessment of your competitive position,
based on sound market research.
Judging Criteria
1. The product(s) or service being
developed or commercialised must
involve innovation.
2. The product(s) or service must be
technically sound and have a clearly
identifi able market need; a strong
competitive market advantage and
a sound commercialisation strategy.
3. Evidence of sound capital base
including:

within acceptable limits for the
relevant industry norm)

Note: Please do not send large
quantities of promotional or
other supporting material such
as case histories, advertising,
catalogues, videos, brochures
or annual reports. Judges
will base their decision solely
on the written information
included in your application. The
deadline for receiving entries is
