The Microsoft OneNote 2013 note-taking program is a digital notebook for capturing, 
storing, and sharing all kinds of information—notes, pictures, webpages, and media. You 
can access your OneNote information wherever you go, on your favorite devices. Create 
notes, sketch a diagram, record a lecture, and connect them to related presentation files, 
photos, videos, web links, charts, and more, right in your notes. 
The first thing you’ll see when you open OneNote 2013 is a fresh, clean look that helps you 
focus on your thoughts and ideas instead of the interface. Full integration with the cloud 
through Microsoft OneDrive for Business means that you can free your files from your 
computer’s hard drive. Access your notes on OneDrive for Business from your tablet or 
Windows Phone, or from virtually any browser.

Capturing your ideas 
In OneNote 2013, you can capture all your ideas—meeting notes, screen shots, vacation 
plans, and more—in one place. 
Clipping and saving information as you go 
The improved Send to OneNote tool makes it easier than ever to clip whatever you’re 
seeing on your screen. Clip a screen shot, send a webpage or an entire document to a 
notebook section, or jot down a random Quick Note that is automatically saved and filed as 
part of your notebook. 
To use the Send To OneNote tool: 
1.
In OneNote, press the Windows logo key +N to open the Send to OneNote tool. 
You can keep this tool in the background as you do your work or surf the web. 
2.
Do one of the following: 
To capture a screen shot, tap or click the Screen Clipping tile (or press +S), and 
then draw a rectangle around the area that you want to capture. 
To send a document to OneNote, open the document, and then tap or click the 
Send to OneNote tile. 
NOTE: To jot down a Quick Note, tap or click the New Quick Note tile.

In the Select Location in OneNote dialog box, select the notebook and section where 
you want to place the clipping or document.

Embedding an Excel spreadsheet or a Visio diagram 
You can attach just about any computer file to any part of your notes, which stores a copy 
of the file in your notebook. You can also create or embed a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet or 
Microsoft Visio drawing in a OneNote notebook and see content previews from your 
notebook. If you make a change in Excel or Visio, the preview is automatically updated, so 
you can see the information that you care about right next to your notes. You can also 
update the data or drawing from OneNote. 
To embed an Excel spreadsheet: 
1.
On the Insert tab, tap or click the Spreadsheet button. 
2.
On the menu, do one of the following: 
a.
Tap or click Existing Excel Spreadsheet. 
b.
Select the spreadsheet that you want to insert, and then tap or click Insert. 
c.
In the Insert File dialog box, specify whether you want to attach the file or insert it 
as a spreadsheet, chart, or table. 
–Or– 
a.
Tap or click New Excel Spreadsheet. 
b.
Tap or click Edit in the spreadsheet graphic in OneNote. 
c.
Enter your data in Excel. 
To embed a Visio drawing: 
1.
On the Insert tab, tap or click the Visio icon. 
2.
Do one of the following: 
a.

NOTE: You can also just copy and paste a file into OneNote. OneNote will prompt you to decide 
whether you want to attach or insert the file. 
Creating sophisticated tables 
OneNote 2013 has key table features built in. You can sort and move rows and columns. 
You can use formatting options to shade cells, so you can create more sophisticated tables. 
If you want to create data visualizations or do more advanced data work, you can convert a 
table into an embedded Excel spreadsheet by using one tap or click. 
To convert a table into an Excel spreadsheet: 
1.
Select the table in OneNote. 
2.
On the Layout tab, tap or click Convert to Excel Spreadsheet. 
3.
To edit the spreadsheet in Excel, tap or click Edit in the spreadsheet graphic in 
OneNote. 
Drawing, sketching, or handwriting notes 
Improved inking in OneNote 2013 enables you to smoothly draw, erase, and edit 
seamlessly, whether you’re using your finger, a stylus, or a mouse. If you prefer writing to 
typing, OneNote can automatically convert your handwriting to text. 
Adding online pictures 
In OneNote 2013, you can insert an online picture into a notebook directly from Flickr and 
other online services without saving the picture to your computer.

To insert an online picture into a notebook: 
1.
On the Insert tab, tap or click the Online Pictures button. 
2.
In the Insert Pictures dialog box, select the source for the picture. If you want to insert 
a picture from Flickr, tap or click the Sign in link at the bottom of the dialog box. 
Using OneNote on the go 
OneNote 2013 is your digital notebook that travels with you. You can use it to keep 
information for your projects in a centralized location. 
Creating and saving a new notebook on OneDrive for Business 
When you store your notebooks in the cloud on OneDrive for Business, you can seamlessly 
access your notes when you’re on the go. 
CAUTION: Make sure to use OneDrive for Business (not your personal SkyDrive account) to 
store business documents. Your personal SkyDrive account is a consumer service and is not 
suitable for business information. 
To create and save a new notebook on OneDrive for Business: 
1.
Tap or click File, and then tap or click New.

Under New Notebook on the left side of the screen, tap or click Microsoft, and then 
tap or click Documents on the right side of the screen.

In the Create New Notebook dialog box, type a notebook name, and then tap or click 
Create. 
The following dialog box appears.

To immediately start sharing the notebook: 
a.
In the Microsoft OneNote dialog box, tap or click Invite people. 
b.
In the Share dialog box, under Invite People, type the names or email 
addresses of the people that you want to share with, set permissions (view or 
edit), add a message (optional), and then tap or click Share. People on your 
invitation list will receive a link to the notebook. 
TIPS: 
To open the notebook directly from another device, look under Recent 
Documents on OneDrive for Business. 
You can also create a notebook from OneDrive for Business by using Microsoft 
OneNote Web App. You can use OneNote Web App in virtually any browser.

Using OneNote Windows Store App for Windows 8 
OneNote has been reimagined for the Windows 8 operating system, with an innovative user 
interface that features radial menus. You can install and use the OneNote Windows Store 
App for an immersive Windows 8 experience. 
To learn more about the OneNote Windows Store App, search for OneNote in the Windows 
Store. 
Sharing notes 
OneNote 2013 makes it simple to share notebooks that are stored in the cloud. The easiest 
way to share is to send a link, but several other methods are available. 
Sharing a notebook saved on OneDrive for Business 
To share a notebook that you've saved on OneDrive for Business: 
1.
Open the notebook that you want to share. 
2.
Tap or click File, and then tap or click Share. 
3.
On the left side of the screen, under Share, tap or click Invite People. 
4.
On the right side of the screen, under Invite People, type the names or email 
addresses of the people that you want to invite, set permissions (view or edit), type a 
message (optional), and then tap or click Share. People on your invitation list will 
receive a link to the notebook. 
TIP:
You can also share a notebook directly from OneDrive for Business. Just right-click the notebook on 
OneDrive for Business, tap or click Copy shortcut, and then send the link to the person that you want to share 
the notebook with.
Sharing notes in a Lync online meeting 
To share notes in a Microsoft Lync online meeting: 
1.
Open the notebook that you want to share. 
2.
Tap or click File, and then tap or click Share. 
3.
On the left side of the screen, under Share, tap or click Share with Meeting, and then 
tap or click Share with Meeting on the right side of the screen.

In the Share Notes with an Online Meeting dialog box, select an existing meeting or 
tap or click Start a new Lync Meeting. 
Sharing notes in an Outlook meeting invitation 
Integration with the Microsoft Outlook messaging and collaboration client is improved in 
OneNote 2013. You can connect your notes directly to an Outlook meeting invitation. 
Meeting participants can then tap or click the View meeting notes link in the invitation to 
open the notes. 
When you attach notes to a meeting invitation, OneNote automatically records the meeting 
date and time, the meeting organizer, and meeting participants. 
To share notes in Outlook: 
1.
Open the Outlook 2013 Calendar, tap or click the Home tab, and then tap or click New 
Meeting or New Lync Meeting. 
2.
On the Meeting tab, tap or click Meeting Notes. 
3.
If you want to share the notes with other participants at the meeting, in the Meeting 
Notes dialog box, tap or click Share notes with the meeting. If you want to take notes 
just for yourself, tap or click Take notes on your own.

In the Choose Notes to Share with Meeting dialog box, select the notebook and the 
page in the notebook where you want to insert the notes. If the notebook doesn’t exist 
yet, tap or click New Notebook. 
Taking notes in a Lync online meeting 
You can use a single set of notes for all meeting participants when you use OneNote and 
Lync together. Invite attendees, add the presentation or document that you’re discussing, 
and everyone can take notes. 
To take notes in a Lync online meeting: 
1.
In a Lync conversation window, tap or click the   button. 
2.
At the top of the dialog box that appears, tap or click ONENOTE. 
3.
Tap or click Shared Notes if you want to share notes with other participants. Tap or 
click My Notes if you want to take notes just for yourself. 
Seeing who is collaborating 
In OneNote 2013, you can identify and authenticate other authors more easily by using 
integrated profiles. Search for notebook changes and revisions by authors’ names and view 
all recent edits. You’ll see a colored bar next to new or edited text.

Searching through notes 
In OneNote 2013, you don’t have to remember where you put anything. Your notes are 
automatically saved and searchable. You can even find the words that you’re looking for in 
pictures. 
Reducing distractions by using Full Page view 
Your notes are the most important part of OneNote. When you want to reduce distractions 
and see just your notes, you can use Full Page view: 
Tap or click the View tab, and then tap or click Full Page View (or press F11). 
To go back to Normal view, tap or click the three dots at the top of the OneNote window. 
Using touch 
OneNote 2013 provides support for touch-enabled computers and devices that are running 
the Windows 8 and Windows 7 operating systems, so you can be productive with or 
without a keyboard. 
If you want to enlarge the space between buttons on the ribbon to make it easier to select 
options by using your fingers, you can use the Touch/Mouse Mode button. You can add 
the Touch/Mouse Mode button to the Quick Access Toolbar so that you can easily switch 
back and forth between touch and mouse modes. 
To add the Touch/Mouse Mode button to the Quick Access Toolbar: 
1.
Tap or click the arrow on the Quick Access Toolbar. 
2.
Tap or click Touch/Mouse Mode to add it to the toolbar.
