Virtual Encoder and Generic Subtitles Default Devices
The default caption device Virtual Encoder and the default subtitle device Generic
Subtitles work well for a typical file-based workflow (which means, when hardware
devices are not used). Both of these devices are designed to emulate hardware
encoders. The Virtual Encoder and Generic Subtitles devices work for SD, HD, and
UHD resolutions. Generic Subtitles also provides more positioning options and user
selectable fonts.
When you need certain options you can also use devices for a file-based workflow that
have hardware names, and you do not need to have the actual hardware device
connected. Some of the available devices are only for SD resolution video, such as
Generic DVD. HD resolution, including 720p and 1080i/p, require devices such as
Blu-ray, or the default devices.
