whenenteringreferencestoimproveconsistencyandaccuracyofinformationinyourlibrary.YoucanalsousetheJournalsterm
listtostoreabbreviatedjournalnamesthatEndNotecansubstituteforthefulljournalnameinabibliography.
Togetageneralsenseofhowthetermlistswork,here’sabriefoverviewofhowtermlistscanbebuiltandusedforsomeone
withanewEndNotelibrary.Withthedefaulttermlistsettingsinthepreferences,alloftheupdatingofterms,andauto-com-
pletion,happensautomatically.Ifyoudonotlikethisbehavior,youmayturnoffthesesettings(seeTerm
List
Preferences
).
TermListsareAutomaticallyMaintained
WhenyoucreateanewEndNotelibrary,therearethreeemptytermlistsalreadysetupandreadyforyoutouse:Authors,Jour-
nals,andKeywords.Asyouenternewreferencesintoyourlibrary(whetherbytyping,importing,orpastingthem)EndNote
updatesthetermlistsautomaticallysothattheAuthors,Journals,andKeywordslistsincludealloftheauthornames,journal
names,andkeywordsenteredintoyourreferences.
TermListsHelpWithDataEntry
WhenyouusetheNewReferencecommandintheReferencesmenutocreatenewreferences,youwillnoticetwootherfeatures
associatedwiththetermlists.Asyoubeginenteringanauthorname,EndNoteattemptstocompletethenameforyoubysug-
gestingtheclosestmatchingnameintheAuthorstermlist.IfyouenteranewnamethatisnotalreadyinyourAuthorlist,the
nameappearsinredtexttoindicatethatitisanewadditiontothetermlist.Whenyoucloseorsavethereference,thatnewterm
isaddedtothelist.
Whenyouaresearchingforreferences,youcanalsoopenatermlisttopicktheexacttermornameforwhichtosearch.

youplantouseintoatermlistbeforeenteringreferencesintothelibrary.Thiscanbeextremelyhelpfulwhenyouhavesomeone
elseenteringdataforyouandyouwantaspecificvocabularyusedforkeywordsorotherterms.Asreferencesareenteredinto
theEndNotelibrary,thetermlistscanspeeddataentry,andifaredtermappears,thepersondoingdataentryknowsthatthey

TurningOfftheAutomaticUpdatingofTermLists:
1. FromtheEndNotemenu,selectPreferences.
2. SelecttheTermListspanel.
3. Clickthecheckboxesfor"Updatelistswhenimportingorpastingreferences"and"Updatelistsduringdataentry"to
removethecheckmark.Thefeaturewillbeturnedoff.
Delimiters
EndNotehaspredefinedtermlistsforauthors,keywords,andjournals.WhenyouentermultipletermsintothosefieldsandEnd-
Noteupdatesthetermlist,itneedstoknowwhenonetermendsandthenexttermbegins.Wecallthepunctuationthatsep-
aratestheterms"delimiters."
FortheAuthorfields,authornamesmustalwaysbeenteredonenameperline.Carriagereturns(endoflinemarks)aretheonly
validdelimiterforthisfield.Journalsnormallyhavejustonejournalnameperreferenceinthisfield,sodelimitersarenotimpor-
tanthere.Keywordsarethemostcomplexofthethree.Bydefault,EndNoteusescarriagereturns(endoflinemarks),sem-

Thetextthatisusedtoseparatethetermsinaparticularfieldisdeterminedbythe"Delimiter"settingsontheListstabofthe

Ifyourkeywordsareseparatedbyaslash,suchas:
Antarctica/ozone/stratosphere
youshouldtypeaslash(/)asthefield’stermdelimiter.Acarriagereturnisalwaysinterpretedasadelimiter,soitisnotnec-

AfterusingtheUpdateListcommand,youmightfindthatduetoerrorsorvariationsinspelling,youhavemultipleentriesforthe
sameterm.Scanthroughthelistanddeletetheunwantedterms.
Ifnecessary,usetheFindandReplacecommandfromtheEditmenutochangealloccurrencesofaterminyourlibrary.For

Bydefault,EndNoteusesthesemicolon(;)andbackslash(\),andendoflinemarkersasseparators.Wordsorphrasesentered
ondifferentlinesinafield(bypressingReturn
Enter)arealwaysinterpretedasseparateterms,buttheotherseparatorscanbechangeddependingonyourneeds.

3. Verifythatyourlibrarynameisselectedatthetopofthedialog,thenclickonthenameofthetermlistthatyouintendto
modify.
4. Clickthecheckboxtotheleftofthedesiredseparatortoselectit(ortounselectitifitisalreadychecked).
